So I 'm finally going to order a proper case for my minis. I don't know much about them, other then that I cannot afford battlefoam. Sabol looks to fit more in my budget - but I don't know much about what's out there.

I was hoping someone could make some suggestions on what trays I need. Right now I have:

____________________

about 50 or so Ork Boyz and equivalent sizes
1 shokk attack gun
3 warbikes
1 battlewagon
1 trukk

about 30 space marines
around 10 assault marines (mounted on wire, so about 1/2" taller then normal SM)
around 15 terminators
3 dreadnoughts
3 land raiders
a TFC

about 60 necron warriors and some same-size immortals/lord
3 necron destroyers
3 necron wraiths

and

10x black orcs
3x boar boyz
3x river trolls

and of course

dice, templates, tape, the BRRB and codexes
________________________________________

So what size trays are appropriate? Looking through the images on the warstore, it seems like they fit space marines in both 1" trays and 1.5" trays, with them being upright in the 1.5" trays - is this a better way to go?

I don't expect or need a bag that can transport all of that at the same time. I do need one that can be configured to make the best use for 2 of those available armies. Any alternative companies are OK, and general comments on looking for bags are also welcome. Thank you.

depends on how Dynamically Posed your miniatures are. Space Marines at bolter ready position, similar to AoBR marines, will lie flat in 1inch trays just fine. However, Assault marines or Devastators probably won't. For my Terminators I use the 2in thick trays and stand them upright, except for the Cyclone guys who lie flat.

Land Raiders I think need the 3 or 4inch foam, and I have not been able to get 2 in a single Sabol Tray. What I HAVE done is be able to put a LR and either Dreads or Land Speeders in one tray.

Outrider and Battlefoam both make Sabol Compatible trays, and you might be able to get custom load outs for things like the TFC or the Necron Warriors.

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Go for the "standing" trays... and don't go with 1.5" trays. Use 2" trays. Too many dynamically posed models or models on bases with terrain features under them will stick out of the tops of 1.5" trays. Been there, done that.

You can comfortable get about 24 models into a Sabol tray, standing up, without any real trouble.
I did gt 30 into one, but I had to take ALL of the foam out & customize EVERY slot. SOOO not worth it.
Bank on getting 24 on "average"

So, looking at your set up, I'd anticipate the following numbers. Keep in mind that some of these will leave you with partially used trays. They won't all be totally full:

Orks
3 @ 2"
1 @ 4"

-The 4" tray is too tall for the Trukk, but good for the BWagon. Save $ by putting both into one 4" tray

-If your bikes are TOO dynamically posed, they won't fit into a 2" tray. Measure the height of the tallest one, if you are in doubt

SM
4 @ 2"
1 @ 3"
2 @ 4"

-I have no prpblems getting 2 LR's into 1 4" tray
- Check your height on the Dreads to be sure they are all below 4". If any are too tall, increase the 3" tray to a 4"
-Alternatively, you MIGHT be able to get 3 Dreads into a tray with 1 LR, eliminating 1 tray.

Nec
2 @ 2"
1 @ 3"

-Necron Warriors are small. You may be able to get 30 standing into a tray. If not, you can overflow into the 3".

Orcs

1 @ 2"

-I don't play fantasy, but you MIGHT be able to get all this into 1 tray, if you lay down the Trolls

So, you're looking at 15 trays. At around $7.50 each, that's $112.50 without shipping or taxes.

Thank you both. This was exactly the sort of analysis I needed.

At this point the Battlefoam doesn't seem so overpriced by comparison, since the trays are so much larger and I can pack them more densely. Perhaps that route is a better way to go after all.

Depends on what you want.
Battlefoam trays are rather custom, so you're likely to end up carrying them around by hand, if you don't go with a case & foam combo.

Of course, Romeo could give you a far better cost analysis for this sruff than any of us.

Just make sure he knows if you'll be storing your minis standing or laying. It affects how many can fit into a tray & how thick the tray has to be.
