I have been simple greening my marines and repainting them slow and I have gotten to my Assault squad. I think I may have fielded this unit like twice... maybe just once. But I love the models, either way, since I have just about zero experience with these guys what do you guys think the best load out is for a full unit. Power weapon, power fist, thunder hammer, claws? Plasma, flamers?

A fun thing to do with C: SM Assault Squads is to drop pod with double flamers and a TH or PF. Throw a Servo Harness Techmarine for a 3rd flamer and Vulkan if he is your HQ choice. 3 Flamers and a HF (all twin linked!) I have an 1850 list with this in it. Not the most competitive but definitely a fun unit to play. The look on my friends face as I tell him that his marines have about 25 to 30 saves to make is priceless.

Technically, Vulkan's HF is not TL. In his entry it says his gauntlet can be fired as a HF. "Firing as" is not the same thing as "is".
Personally I like the 5 man team with 2 PP and a PF and deep strike behind vehicles and TRY to pop it.
Not effective as I would like, but my opponents typically freak because they don't wanna even take the chance to lose their very expensive tank.

Assault marines are rarely worth it unless you've got a lot of them, and take a jump pack Chaplain as well. Even then, they' won't be able to go toe to toe with dedicated Close Combat units. They're good for bullying weaker units, however.

@ OP: Depends how you want to use them. I'd recommend 10 with a Thunder hammer and 2 meltaguns. They are generally pretty crappy for Ultramarines and friends. If you like assault squads you might want to play Blood Angels.

No, Vulkan's gauntlet thingy counts as a twin-linked heavy flamer.

what i do, is use my vanguard with a whirlwind, using the assault marines or vanguard as a mop, and the whirlwind doing the most damage.
Also, if you have the points, use ur assault marines as vanguard (that's what i did)
You get an extra attack per model, more special weps and you save $28 or so

If I could take two meltagun they might actually do something. I understand Assault squads suck hence the reason they been shelved for so long just figured if I am gunna repaint them mights well re-equip them too. And I don't like Assault Marines enuff to want to play the Space Vampires
Thanks for the advice everyone

Assult marines are a great unit. Take 10 to a squad and a flamer, use them correctly and they are worth it.

Assault marines are quite awesome in the BA codex though! Double melta and some sang priests to buff them!

Powerfist, 2 Flamers. That's about it. Use it to hunt slow footslogging units like Gaunts, Boys, Genestealers, etc. Don't be afraid to jump in and out of difficult terrain if needed, and don't expect the unit to take on any other dedicated CC unit.

Boosting Ultramarine Biker

I've been using a 10-man unit of Assault marines alongside my mech.bike force for a while.
I started out with a powerfist, plasma pistol, and flamer. A little bit of a jack-of-all-trades unit that could deal with light vehicles, small hordes, or an MC.
I later swapped over to a 10-man unit with powerfist and double flamers, attached to a jump pack librarian with Avenger and Null Zone.
I've been keeping these gents in reserve, and dropping them into opponents' backfields to roast fire support infantry units (Lootaz HATE that, as do minimum-sized Long Fangs). Two standard flamer shots, one S5AP3 flamer shot (Avenger), and eight bolt pistol shots.
It's purely a suicide unit, and an expensive one at that.

I did a similar thing out of a drop pod. Double flamers, PF, and Libby with avenger. The unit killed 2 squads of berzekers, a squad of possesed marines, shrike (it was a 2v2), and couple of other kills in a command squad!
