Playing a game against my friend's Blood Angels he takes a squad of 3 Sanguinary Priests. He states that he can split up the squad pregame and put them with other squads because of the first bullet rule on page 83. I disagree because it says that independent character's can leave a squad only during the movement phase (page 48 bullet 3 on right side). Which is correct?

Thanks in advance,

The Weasel King

If Bruce Lee is advocate and does kick someone between the legs in a fight, why would I be to good to do it?

My fighting style: Hit em hard, hit em fast, hit em where it hurts, hit em where they can't see you or hit back.

It's funny how everyone wants their opponent list to be fun to play against and yet their own playlists are often tough as nails and impossible to modify.-Q'iq'el on ATT

How would ICs join drop podding units then? He is correct if I remember.

You can have ICs join units in deployment.

2,500pts Hive Fleet Goliath - Tyranids --- W-10 . . D-4 . . L-5
2,000pts Empire of Quatar - Tomb Kings W-3 . . D-1 . . L-6

They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them, and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines so that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear.

He is correct. They're not even necessarily a unit at the start of the game.

Your opponent is right. I'm sure someone with the codex on hand can tell you why.

HFG is right, but with some addition.

If you place a unit in reserve, by the book, you have to say what that unit is made of per the rules on page 94.

You cant have a squad of IC's defined as a squad placed into reserve, then separate them out to fit into the other vehicles after that declaration.

He says that he can split up the squad pregame into 3 deep striking terminator squads so that all 3 squads can deep strike with feel no pain. Does this make sense with what you are saying? What I got from what you said was that they all have to be declared as a squad of 3 ICs instead of 3 terminator squads with 1 IC in each (when taken as a single elite choice).

Alright, well sorry for this but my friend just reread his codex and it says squad size of 1 but 3 can be taken as a single elite choice which makes the argument a moot point. He wins, not even based on his originally quoted rule, but on another rule he overlooked. Thanks for the quick responses though.

For future, Your first point is dead on the money.

If i had 3 IC's in a squad, i can during the deployment phase split them up and allocate them to other units before deployment.

I then say those units are going to be held in reserve, inclusive of the unit that was there.

IC's can be joined to any unit before the game unless there is a rule that says otherwise. (EG IC's and Bodyguards)

They are not a Squad they are 1-3 independent characters purchased in 1 elite slot.

Space Wolf Wolf Guard However are a Squad that can be broken up pregame to join other squads, of course they are not ICs so whatever.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

You didn't say, but I thought worth mentioning. If the 3 Priests were to join DSing Terminators, they must be in Terminator armour themselves.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

Sanguinary priests aren't purchased as a unit comprised of 1-3 models, you're allowed to take 3 selections of the unit "Sanguinary priest" and have it only occupy a single elite foc slot.

Completely different from wolfguard who are a unit of models that has a rule allowing them to be split up during deployment.

You are wrong.

Sanguinary Priests are not bought in units fo 3 models, they are bought in units of one model, three times per FoC slot.

Off-topic: Say I have 3 Sanguinary Priest, if they all die, then each is one KP?

I'm sure that in that situation its 3 KP's but I just want to make sure.

Yes, they each count as a KP.

They are 3 separate units, so yes, they are 3KP.

Just to follow up on that, the rules for separate units are on pg 92 of the BRB.

Also in a standard game you can't have 3 terminator squads and 3 sanguinary priests (4 Elite slots)

I presume you can attach 2 to a unit of 10 and 1 to a unit of 5 and combat squad the unit of 10 each with an attached priest when they deepstrike though?
