Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

You might want to wait for the new codex which (depending on the rumors you believe and the truthiness of any rumors) is supposedly out either in Septemberish or Januaryish. It's either them or DE as the next 40K codex, according to most "sources." The only reason I suggest waiting is that whenever the codex is released, it will likely drastically change how they play and offer new models for you to consider. It'd be hard to recommend committing to stuff now when it will likely change.

Frankly, I don't believe there is a good army list for the GK right now. I've seen them in action played by a very competant chap, and played on their side in a few doubles games and they just do not work.

Wait for the new 'dex.

If you're a slow painter, start now with the stuff we think will stay:

GK Terminators
PA Grey Knights

Stay away from any Inquisitorial HQ or troop choices, as who know what's in and what's out.

Actually, you're probably better off waiting...

i would buy some of the metal models.

i worry about them being discontinued when they get released in plastic.

buy Terminators and PAGKs. Don't get any LRs or Dreadnoughts yet.

here's a list i just used and it was quite effective.

HQ
Grand Master (psycannon, holy relic)
5 terminator bodyguards (psycannon)

ELITE
6 man Terminator squad (incinerator)

TROOPS
two 5 man PAGK squads each with 2 psycannons

two 10 man PAGK squads each with 1 incinerator

HEAVY SUPPORT
Dreadnought with TL-lascannon

Dreadnought with Multi-melta and Incinerator

2006 pts

While this isn't an army list a cheap way (And fun since I love converting units) to get some GK termies is from black reach and convert them, and here's the article http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63739&d=1246218333

I personally would only mess with the GKT, as currently they are the only good unit in the book on its own merits (though an inq with 2 mystics is a common site in IG related lists)

PAGKs are really expensive storm bolters on guys who are as durable as a normal marine. Sure they get boosted Strength, but its not power weapons except on the Sgt, and he costs 25 points, which is a very expensive PW. Lack of good long range firepower and a slew of useless rules makes for a poor choice. Psycannons are nice, but effectively boosted heavy bolters or bad assault cannons aren't going to win you games in 5th ed.

GKT, are actually really good, with at I S6 PW, and they don't cost all that much more than regular termies. Sure they are still expensive, but they do have access to nice upgrades like plopping templates into an active combat. Feels so dirty whenever I do that, esp against horde armies like nids and orks.

Since they are getting redone soon, most likely being kicked into a generic SM mold but with own flavor (like SW and BA) they are most likely going to get a bunch of new options and models, so don't buy models unless you really want to paint them or like how they look. I'm betting that the PAGK is going to be plastic soon.

you want PAGKs with Psycannon.

Stern is good for higher point games and when you want 2 Force weapons.

Terminators with Psycannon.

always give your brother captains and GKGMs psycannon.

Phobos pattern landraiders(Lascannon) are what you need. the crusader has awsome rules, but GKs have masses of Bolter fire covered already. in lower point games Dreadnoughts with Tl-lascannon and a Missile launcher ar good.

GKs lack anti-tank in their infantry and they need to take it on their tanks.

Ally in some GKTs into another army with a newer codex. Pairing a squad of GKTs up with Kor'Sarro/Sanguinary Priests works pretty well.

GKTs are brutal, the rest of the stuff is generally too overpriced and/or old.

Also, Justicars (equiv. of sergeant), is actually 50 points, not 25. NORMAL PAGKs are 25pts a piece.

So you are looking at 150pts for a 5 man squad that die just as easily as normal marines to gunfire, but at least are much better at CC. However, with them costing that much, you'd never want to throw them into CC to begin with...
