So I am working on building some Stormbirds over in the P&M Blogs. These are the rules I am proposing what do you think? I still need to come up with a points cost and maybe add some weapons.

ACCESS POINTS: One rear loading ramp, one forward Assault Ramp, 2 side hatches

Transport: 100 Space Marines
Terminators and bikes count as 2 models, Attack Bikes count as 3 models, Dreadnoughts count as 5 models, Rhino class tanks count as

10 models, no more than 2 Rhino class tanks can be carried.

WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT:
- Vulcan Mega Bolter
- One chin mounted Twin linked Heavy Bolter
- 6 Hellstrike Missiles

Here is a revision. I had not looked closely at the thunderhawk before I wrote the first pass. I am not sure that twice the points is quite right This doesn't carry quite the same level of weaponry as the thunderhawk It is much more of a transport and the thunderhawk is more of a fighter/bomber with some transport.

UNIT: 1 Stormbird Heavy Assault Lander

TYPE: Super Heavy Flyer

Structure points
• 4 Structure points

ACCESS POINTS: Two side hatches, one rear loading ramp, one forward Assault Ramp, units disembarking from a Stormbird may assault on the same turn

Transport: 100 Space Marines
Terminators and bikes count as 2 models, Attack Bikes count as 3 models, Dreadnoughts count as 10 models, Rhino class tanks count as
20 models, no more than 2 Rhino class tanks can be carried.

WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT:
- Vulcan Mega Bolter
- One chin mounted Twin linked Heavy Bolter
- 6 Hellstrike Missiles

Special Rules:
• Hover Mode
• Ceramite Shielding

Ceramite Shielding: In order to resist the heat of atmospheric entry
a Stormbird has thick ceramite shielding. Weapons with the ‘Melta’ special rule never roll an extra dice for armour penetration
against the Stormbird.

1200 should do then I wasn't to sure on the Thawk price, you should make 1 of the weapons on it AA just to give you the extra stopping power

Ya that was about the price point I was thinking. Wat are the AA rules for weapons mounted on fliers?

AA weapons fire at their normal BS instead of hitting only on sixes againt flyers, otherwise as normal

Here's the link grey templar http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/295272.page

Also except for the armour rating those rules look about right. I would put the points as similar to the thunderhawk transport, probably a bit higher as 10 dreads can pack more of a punch than 2 land raiders. Also 5 terminators or 1 dread? that seems like a bit of a foregone conclusion doesn't it? I mean it'd be a massacre.

personally i'd say make terminators and assault marines count as a single model given the size of the stormbird.

That is what I remember.

It is 26" long the troop compartment is probably twice as long as a thunderhawk.

That all looks good to me, sounds like it'll work well
Here is what the apoc rulebook says just to let you know as it may help you.

model's type.........................................Counts as
Infantry (25mm base)............................1
Infantry (>25mm base)......................2
Jump Infantry........................................2
Cavalry/Beast.......................................3
Bike/Jetbike..........................................3
Artillery (crew)......................................1
Artillery (gun).......................................5
Monstrous Creature..............................10
Walker................................................10
(It also has other vehicles as N/A but you have already solved that by specifying rhino tanks)

I hope that helps in some way

Thunderhawk can carry 30, not 100, but has more weapons, 1200pts seems right, but don't forget to give the Vulcan Mega Bolter the Primary Weapon special rule.

Weren't the StormBirds actually supposed to be smaller than the Thunderhawks? I was actually reading about them last night...

Storm ravens are smaller than Thawks

the storm bird was developed for the pre heresy legions which were commonly deployed at company strength (about 100 marines) since the legions could be 1000's of marines strong

Stormbirds were used during the Unification wars before the Space marines even existed.

Thunderhawks were developed as a smaller version of the bulkier Stormbird.

the Stormbird STC was lost and so Thunderhawks became the primary gunship.

any Stormbirds existing now would be truly Ancient machines, older then many Titans.

Ah yet again games workshops 'a wizard did it' card. You'd think that they would have some left and you'd think they'd reverse engineer them but no. I guess that only players like siegemaster would have a use for them as at anywhere other than siege world I can't see why you'd bother as you'd never fill the capacity unless you were using it along the lines of 'me orkz loo'eed it itz ars now' as a marine force big enough to need one would be massive.

edit: I didn't see this earlier
personally i'd say make terminators and assault marines count as a single model given the size of the stormbird.
If it holds 100 marines then it holds 100 marines. Terminators and assaults are bigger than marines due to much larger armour in the case of termies and jump packs in the case of assault marines.

it seemed to have worked for tempus fugitives, terminators and assault marines counting as a single model due to the sheer size of the stormbird. just throwing that out there

Yeah, but unless it had ridiculous amounts of room when holding 100 marines (enough space for another hundred or 2) it would still not have room for the same amount of termies or assaults

HEre are some quick comparison shots I took the other day to show how much bulkier the stormbird is as compared to a thunderhawk.

Armour? Its HUGE and its supposed to shelter a full company of astartes, AV12 seems to be a little on the risky side to trust 100 marines with.

Weapons?
This bird is supposed to deliver a full company into the middle of the heat so the weapon loadout should reflect just that. It has to handle AAA extremely well so decoys against ground to air missiles should be a must as should lots of missiles designed to handle tracked anti air artillery.

Against man portable air missiles it should have its own artillery to saturate the deployment zone in sharpnell and smoke.

Well down as the marines deploy (not all jump out of their transports while in flight) it must cover them for the moments they deploy so lots of anti infantry weapons like assault cannons and heavy bolters are called for as well as a few anti tank weapons as enemy armour facing a deploying stormbird would be an absolute disaster.

So if you want to build a stormbird make it well versed to fly and deliver a full company into a hostile drop zone whilst defending itself on approach, dealing with ground defenses properly and being able to support the troops as they disembark!

The thing should probably be like a crossover between a flying fortress and a spectre gunship with the correct size adjustment.
Full of weapon pods facing all directions, a full decoy suite, armoured up like hell and packing its own artillery as well as being able to spew out a fearsome amount of close ranged anti infantry lead.
Oh, and multiple engines are always a plus when it comes to durability, it probably had 4-6 so it can handle the loss of one or a couple engines on approach. You simply cant risk 100 marines on a lucky shot taking out an engine.
