Personally, I would take 1-2 squads of twenty, and in an objective game do everything I could to put the markers in some woods and then just sit the kroot on them. The Emperor knows they'll survive a lot longer than FW.

Three basic things kroot do well:
Provide bubblewrap/speed bump.
Cut off opposing infiltrators.
Hold the hell out of an objective in woods.
A common kroot setup is something along the lines of 10 kroot and 6 hounds - this can give you good bubblewrap and the ability to charge and actually do some damage.
Max squads of kroot, ignoring points and footprint, can do good things through sheer weight of fire, but that's rarely a good reason to take something.

a few hounds can add some "bite" to a squad.
if they go in a forest then they will have a 3+ cover save minimum(2+ if they go to ground) and like said earlier they can hold any forested objective pretty good, but watch out for flamers.
they can also provide a decent amount of firepower from their guns. its not much, but it is a potential to kill.
on the charge they can take a good chunk out of an enemy unit. Hounds are good against MEQs due to I4.
be warned that they won't last long against any unit in prolonged CC. not having an armor save and the same T as a guardsman hurts them.

Focused Fire Warrior

If you run the math hammer vs marines in straight shooty they actually beat FW. Even though their weapons are only ST 4 weapons the shear number of them for equal points makes them a better rifleman then FW.
downsides are they are shorter range than the firewarrior and they have no armor. They must be placed in cover if useing them as shooty but they are almost impossible to dig out without flamers...and getting flamers in that close while 20 of these guys are rapid firing is difficult.
The also infiltrate and are very cheep and carry 2 CCW. certian people consider them much better than FW because of how versitile they are and the better shooty. They also don't blow from a slight breese in CC.
Personly i don't use them though because they mess with my mojo . I think i'll start a farsight army

kroot die in CC without the 6+ save fromn a shaper and even then they die.
even tac marines got them beat. marines have a higher T value and awsome armor saves(which the kroot have absolutly no ability to negate)
If kroot could take some sort of power weapon they would be better in CC.
Don't get me wrong, they are a fantastic CC unit(for the T'au codex anyway) that can be used to effectively to intercept assault units and hold forests.

In my (limited) experience, Kroot are, first and foremost, shooty skirmish unit. Infiltration & outflank can be very useful. They are NOT an assault unit. If there is an opportunity for successful assault, go for it by all means, but don't send them to charge enemy lines. They do not work like Ork Boyz. Watch out for flamers, they are bane of Kroot everywhere...
