...but not if they implement random charge range, power dice, etc. Seems like a great way to take out forethought and encourage people to lay their models on the table, roll some dice, and one of the two walks away the winner.

I was really psyched about getting into Fantasy since having returned from a year long 'trip' a month ago, but the aforementioned just seems downright ridiculous. Imagine having to roll a D6 every time you wanted to move into an opponent's square and take his piece in a game of chess...

Is anyone else looking at the situation as grimly as I am? How is this going to affect the game from the standpoint of attracting new customers?

There are plenty of people looking at the situation as grimly as you are. I am not one of them. I guess I've played these games long enough to feel like there is a constant chorus of "the game has been ruined/is getting ruined/will be ruined by X".

Also, the chess thing always comes up. Chess would not be fun if I had to roll a die to move. But it would also not be fun if I had to roll a die to have a rook take a pawn (or whatever), but that's what you do in Warhammer.

I'm just glad to see things get shaken up across the board, and to be there while everyone figures out how they can settle in to the new rule-set.

I think the charges for the most part are terrible with a few gems. I'm going to give it a chance but honestly Fantasy has been so broken lately I've have no interest in it anyway for like two years. I was hoping that 8th was going to fix things but from the looks at it they are just moving the broken things around while keeping the top tier armies firmly top tier.

Hear, hear! The honorable RZ has spoken... listen, listen well .

Seriously, well said. I'm really excited for the new rules, and to figure out how to play in the new edition along with everyone else.

I agree with Red_Zeke and RiTides. Stop bitching, start painting, and try to have fun, otherwise what's the point?

Fun, of course. It just seems so dire to me, because while i like looking at pretty models and seeing massive battles is great, id like to have a say in what happens on the battlefield.

Rolling dice for attacks is something you can influence in your favor; engaging on good terms, getting flanks, etc. You stack the odds, then roll dice. However, if movement/charges become random, you simply cant stack the odds in the same fashion, and it boils down to just 'seeing what happens'. Imagine the number of battle reports and tourney games ending with 'well, i rolled 1 less then required to engage his chaos knights, so next turn he rolled my line with them'.

The charging not striking first seems to compound the 'lack of forethought' issue, as it seems to make moving with a plan in mind less important, and encourages 'getting stuck in', after which you just roll dice to see where the combat goes.

Keep in mind, ive only played maybe a dozen games in the last five years, and never fully committed to the game. It's been almost two years since my last game, and my only exposure since has been various websites and reading the rulebook/army books. I am not a vet who has become happy with the state of things and am shook up just at the prospect of change; I'm pretty fresh to this game, but a vet of others, and these game mechanics just come off as ludicrous.

To sum up, I intended to invest in Warmachine, or Fantasy, and jump into the local gaming scene, and these changes will likely lose GW a customer.

Well if you hate the new rules then just get together with some people who think like you and play with the current rules.

It is a hobby to have fun and GW rules shouldn't get you down. No one is going to maul you for playing the way you want.

Quoted from "The Defenestrator":
"Yes, I don't buy into the goody goody image the Tau PR machine has churned out . They're all dirty cold-blooded space-communists if you ask me! Besides, their shiny, selfless "we love everyone for the Greater Good" vibe is so unfitting for the "lulz we're all badass jerks" future of 40k. GW needs to play up their cold, calculating, "join us or die, and probably still die anyway" Borg-y style. That's just me of course."

Awww, dice will always find a way to kick you in the teeth, new rules or no.

Take my last game, it was my opponent's self professed last game of 7th, and he wanted to say goodbye to all the things he couldn't do in 8th, by hitting me over the head with them. It was cool, I had a pretty balanced list, and it was just sort of thrown together from what I had in the case. I expected to get beat. I got brutaly raped by my own dice, terror, breath weapons, the ring of hotek and impossible to marchblock flyers. All of these things are nerfed or removed in the new book. I had to take aproximately 25 psycology tests, at LD 8 and 9. I passed about 6, all on the same unit. Cannons misfired, rubber lance syndrome reared it's ugly head, I miscasted twice, many saves failed, and he rolled really, really good to wound. In 8th, just about none of these would happen, instead, I would roll loss of control, and blow up half my charicters, I would have knights charge 4", and I would have contined to foll horribly, and I would have lost just as bad.

Just when you needed that one roll, the dice gods thought it would be funny to see you squirm. Play bloodbowl, it teaches you dice acceptance.

Well adding a random element to charging could make things more interesting since you will have to plan for what you will do if your unit doesn't quite make it and can't just go "I put my big deadly unit of doom 10 inches away from the foot troop and am now completly safe from attack and shall annihilate them with ease next turn."(who knows Dwarfs may even be able to declare charges every now and then) of course if you really want to be sure you will get there you could just set up at under your movement speed pluss 2 and take the risk.

I am also hopefull that the changes to magic shall alter the current all or nothing approch that is the current norm because of the need for everyone to take a reasonable defence againt lots of magic making a small amount of it practicly useless.

Magic Now has a random amount of power dice by rolling 2D6 and adding them together. This is for both players (i think) and the higher of two rolls is how may dispell dice the player has. Each mage can channel 1 power dice per turn and 1 dispell dice per turn by rolling a 6

So i see no reason why you wouldnt take a mage or two
