tl;dr version: I wants ta get me a Chaos Daemons army, without spending myself into debt!

So I'd like to get into playing 40k. I've played a handful of games, many with almost completely proxied armies. It let me get a feel for which armies I liked the best, and much to my own surprise, I kept coming back to Chaos Daemons. I seemed to do pretty well with them, and they're just fun to play.

But Games Workshop seems to have done their best to make it impossible for a newbie to get into playing this army. Either their models are just plain ugly (like the Fiends of Slaanesh), or they're really expensive (like... well, Fiends of Slaanesh, but also Bloodcrushers, all the Greater Daemons/DPs, Soulgrinders, etc.). Most of the troops aren't exactly cheap either, so it doesn't leave much room in the budget for the more fun sections of the army.

So I'm looking for ways to make some cheaper conversions for some of the units. I've tried looking for what others have done, but since it's such a new army, there aren't tons of really cool conversions out there, and looking for alternative models is not easy. Anyone got some good advice, or could point me in the right direction for ideas for converting some of the more expensive units in the army? I'm hoping I can make my search a bit more methodical and productive.

I don't necessarily need a tournament-legal army (not gonna be tournamenting for a while at least!), I just need something I can bring to a local game store and people will be willing to play it. I'm willing to put in a good amount of effort into this, and I'm prepared to spend some good money (just not as much as GW would have me spend).

One idea I had was to convert some bloodcrushers by getting some plastic triceratops (or similar dinosaurs), adding some spiky bits and some plate armour, and giving them bloodletter riders.

Well, at least be sure to buy a whole buttload of green stuff. Then it shouldn't be that hard to convert yourself some troops of chaos demon mayhem.

For Fiends, get a hold of the Fantasy boxed set spider-riders (without the riders), attach the upper half of a box of slaanesh daemonettes, and you can have 10 Fiends for under £20...

Not a bad idea. I absolutely need to get cheaper fiends, they play heavily into nearly any army list I plan to use.

*By the way, 36 fiends of Slaanesh in an Apocalypse game will absolutely rip s*** up. Along with being a nice fluffy 6 squads of 6, which is the perfect squad size to chop up most enemies in one charge. Not that I plan to own 36 fiends, mind you... not yet, anyway.*

I'm digging the Daemon Lord models at Trollforged. I like the ability to customize, and it looks like they're only about $25 a pop.
