Hello,

I've been playing for a long time but I am still new to 5th and very very new to my eldar army.

I typically don't take much in the way of lances, EML, nor fire dragons, but I do find myself taking a high amount of S6 weaponry. Givent that these typically are also high shot count weapons, if enough are fielded to spam levels would they be viable?

Example Guardians with SL in WS with TLSL x3
JB x7 +2 SC
War Spiders x7 + Exarch w/extra spinner
Warwalker with x2 SL x3
Night Spinner
I ALWAYS run Wraithguard and a mounted seer council so those don't fit the bill but I suppose they would be considered my heavy hitters. Can the rest of the army make it?

I also am considering two squadrons of 1 viper with SC and SL.

So, what does the rabble suggest I do?

I brought these bad boys to the 'Ard Boyz:

3 Vypers
Shuriken Cannon, Shuriken Cannon

3 War Walkers
Scatter Laser, Scatter Laser

3 War Walkers
Scatter Laser, Scatter Laser

They were my MVP's

I've been doing it a while, and against certain match-ups, the walkers will eat it, Tyranids have ways to wipe out the walkers easily, though a few armies have trouble.

A list with nothing but S6 spam will get pwned by lists with lots of AV13+. Raider spam will especially screw you over because there's no side of a landraider you can damage. Even AV12 spam will romp you because of your inability to penetrate, though the possibility of side shots might be your saving grace. Unless you're playing against mechdar and you need rear shots, good luck there...

To be sure, S6 spam is an OK thing, and it's kind of cheap. Get yourself a whole passel of scatter walkers and shuriken vypers, and you've got a very nice alpha strike that will beat town AV10 and 11, as well as most every kind of troop and monstrous creature.

However, you absolutely need to fill the rest of your list with stuff that can hurt higher armor. I'm talking a minimum of 3x5 fire dragons in waveserpents. You might want to get storm guardians in waveserpents with fusion guns as well, instead of jetbikes. With all the vypers and walkers there is just no need for jetbikes or warp spiders, that's taking the concept too far.

You also really really want an Eldrad. Eldrad with double Guide will make all the difference for your list. Turning your BS3 guys into BS3 twin linked guys will be HUGE. I'd probably run Eldrad + a fusion gun autarch, to help with your warwalkers outflanking, since they will sometimes need to outflank to get side shots and also to avoid first turn annihilation when you go 2nd against an alpha strike army.

The key thing is that your list needs balance. A list build around S6 shooting complemented by some vehicle mounted BLs and a fire dragon squad or two to deal with high AV targets is an extremely potent Eldar build---especially when it has beaucoup shuriken catapults to really thin out infantry when they get close. If you go overboard on the S6, you will have problems dealing with AV12+ targets amd trying to pry out the units inside of them. I would always take SLs over Shuriken Cannons for the extra 12" range. I would suggest the following for your consideration as an army list example:

HQ: Farseer, Avatar
Troops: 2x Guardians with SL, 1x Dire Avengers in BL Serpent
Elites: 2x 5 Fire Dragons, 1x 10 Banshees with BL Serpent
Heavy: 1x 3 Warwalkers with double SLs, 2x Falcon with Star Cannon

Its not tuned because I threw it together in about three minutes, but it gives you buckets of scatter laser fire to drop on infantry/vehicle squadrons and still gives you some bright lances and fusion guns for anti-armor work. The banshees provide a counter assault element.

Meh, I think that list could be a bit fine-tuned.

not doing the banshees, Warlocks instead?

I am thinking 3x guardians with SL, 2 x 6 dire avengers in WS, wraithguard, war walker, council in falcon, night spinner, group of jet bikes with 2 cannons and embolden spear warlock and a couple of vipers. 2 far seers as HQ.

It's not a full on mech eldar, nor is is the foot slogging deal. I've read a plenty on how that you should go one or the other, so I don't know if this is viable. I'll work up the points and see if there are leftovers for some fire dragons in a WS.

Man... my advice is not to ask Dakka for advice, based on this thread -.-

Meh, serpents with dual shuricannons, or just TLscatter lasers are more effective than guardians with SL platforms.

so remount the guardians in the TL SL WS?

I'm not expecting a ballbreaker list here, just one that is reasonably playable and won't get owned.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
if I have 3, plus all the extras... that's 3 WS with TL SL, and 3 guardian units with SL. Throw in the war walkers and that's 48 shots... with a guide on the walkers 36 are twin linked. Slap some vipers in there and the count goes up...

You can do S6 spam as mech or a foot list, but mixing the two won't work as well (mech is probably the more effective choice).

If you go mech then don't take Guardian Defenders in Serpents, they shouldn't be getting out unless you want to see them die. As you are basically just after the T/L Scatter Laser on the Serpent you are better off taking minimum sized squads of Avengers or small Storm Guardian units with 2 x flamers and Destructor Warlock. Vypers add plenty of S6 on top of this, War Walkers can work but often get left behind only moving 6" per turn. Use Fire Dragons in Serpents and upgrade some of the Serpent weaponry to Bright Lances and you end up with a decent all round list.

On foot War Walkers and Warp Spiders are probably your main source of S6 fire. Guardians Defenders are your main troop choice, but probably have to take Bright Lances or EML to give you some ranged anti-tank ability.

If you ignore all this and run with the list you have posted at least take the Council out of the Falcon and put a scoring unit in it (swap with the Avengers basically) and add some more anti-tank power, that list needs some Bright Lances and Fire Dragons to deal with AV13-14.
