From all the fluff I've read, it always sounded like the dark age of technology was actually a very long golden age. Better tech, universal health care, terminator looking kill-bots (men of iron), etc etc...

Yes, The "dark age" of technology was the real Golden age of man and the Age of Imperium is the real dark age. Ironic like most things human: people living in the Dark age can't recognize it for what it is.

haha. yea it was the peak of humanity so expect to see the best of the best and what is around now is only the tip of the iceberg so to speak of what was once considered typical.
