Do units that "Move as skirmishers" but are not skirmishers remove rank bonuses when they charge a flank?

Hmm. I don't have the book with me, but I guess it depends on whether or not Skirmishers' inability to negate ranks is part of their movement, or a seperate thing. As it stands, I would suspect that the RaI meant for the 360 movement and los arc to be a trade-off for the negation of ranks.

What unit do you have in mind, specifically?

Only actual skirmishers fail to remove ranks, the hydra breaks ranks just fine - especially as when it charges it does NOT move as a skirmisher at all.

I think (in light of a failure to clarify) that Red is more likely to be referring to the razordon or salamander from the Lizardman army. Both move as skirmishers.
To answer the question, I don't know how GW has ruled in this case. RaW doesn't help, it's not addressed. My own take on why skirmishers don't break ranks is that they don't arrive en masse, that is they arrive in combat as soon as they get there. Kinda like the difference between throwing a handful of gravel at a window and throwing a brick. Since I can't see the skinks herding their charges with that great a deal of coordination, I've always played that they don't break ranks. I could be wrong (gasp!), so if anyone knows a concrete answer please speak up before 8th ed changes everything.

Except he cannot be, as salamanders are NOT monster and handler, they ARE skirmishers. So they do not break ranks

Always have been, since their 6th ed book at least.

Monster and Handlers ARE NOT skirmishers, they simply move as skirmishers unless charging. As such they CAN break ranks as long as the unit is US5 of greater - whcih is true for a hydra.

I was simply stating the unit the OP was probably referring to. A unit that "moves as a skirmisher but isn't a skirmisher." Probably the Hydra. His question was do these negate ranks as normal, or do they not as they "move as a skirmisher."

Which is why I answered that they DO break ranks as normal, as they are NOT skirmishers. Especially when they charge they move as a monster, hence reduced moves in terrain etc.
