Recently I was playing against a Tyranid player who took a Trygon. I assaulted him with Khan and we both had some problems with the rules.

I had rolled a 6 when rolling to wound him and we were not sure whether or not you can instantly kill him since he is a MC.

another problem we also had...

"Moonfang: This is an ancient power sword and a relic of the White Scars Chapter. Any rolls to wound on which Kor'Sarro Khan scores a 6 will cause Instant Death, regardless of the targets Toughness." pg 94 Space Marine Codex

So is Moonfang treat as a Relic Blade, and if so does it confer the +1 strength from the Furious Charge, or is it just a power sword?

Moonfang is a relic that is a blade, it is not a Relic Blade.

The Trygon should be dead after Khan rolls a 6 to-wound. They are not immune to ID. Being a Monstrous Creature has no bearing on it at all.

No, it is not a relic blade. It's just a relic in the fluff. Stupid of GW to do it as it does nothing but confuse.

It is just a normal power weapon and as such will benefit from Furious Charge. However, you have picked up on the Relic Blade FC "problem". A Relic Blade will always be S6, and won't ever benefit from FC. In any case though, Moonfang is not a relic Blade, so it's not an issue.

As for being an MC and ID, well, being an MC does NOTHING to prevent ID. Synapse USED TO prevent ID, but not anymore!

Read only the weapon description for the rules. If it doesn't specifically sa, "X is a Relic Blade", or "X is treated as a Relic Blade", then it isn't.

Basically what others have said:

-Moonfang is NOT NOT NOT a Relic Blade.
-The Trygon should have been killed, as it has no rule protecting it from Instant Death.

A similar conflict happens with the Eldar, too- fluff states that the Eldar Warlock's witchblades are "powerful force weapons" or some such, but the actual weapon description doesn't quite follow that claim through :(

Hey, it's Games Workshop, every army codex (or whatever the White Scars have) needs to go all-out to impress its readers. Sadly, we can't use the fluff as rules, or everyone would be insta-killing everything.
