Subject: Pain Train vs. Blood Angels [1850]

I was over at a buddy's house practicing on Saturday, and we played a pretty fierce game. I thought the bat rep might be of interest.
Blood Angels:
Mephiston
Sanguinor
10 man jetpack assault squad w/power weapon, meltaguns
1 priest, Corbulo
4 x 5 5 man assault squads w/las/plas razorbacks, meltaguns and power fists
Pain Train:
Librarian w/Null Zone, Might of the Ancients
5 ironclads w/ assault launchers, heavy flamer meltagun, 2 hunter killer missiles
3 x 5 man tac squads w/ laserbacks
1 9 man assault squad w/pfist, rhino
1 Master of the Forge w/3 servitors
Mission: Kill points, Dawn of War
Deployment:
Pain train sets up first, one laserback as far N as possible, to force them back or to the side
BA set up Mephiston + jump infantry unit to the east of the laserback, as far south as possible
Seize fails
Top 1:
Pain train moves on from the south directly opposite Mephiston/assault squad. 2 Ironclads shoot searchlights at him, second hits. 2 Laserbacks shoot twinlinked lascannons at him, do 2 wounds (he's misdeployed, Mephiston is south of the squad, instead of just behind them for cover). Last razorback moves 12" south, heading back to army. Remaining Ironclads run north a bit, one of them into Mephiston's range.
Bottom 1:
Mephiston + BA jump South, las/plas razors move on 12" at the top, shoot lascannons. First shot destroys an Ironclad (goddamn it). Other lit Ironclad is shaken twice. Sanguinor jumps south + runs, but more central, he's doing a flank run. Mephiston jumps up to the Clad (meltas from unit did nothing but shake another clad), turns on his s10 (stupid hood fails again) and his preferred enemy and charges in. He gets 4 pens, 1234, so he takes off a hand and a leg, one attack back misses.
Top 2:
I decide to focus on the main line, leave the Sanguinor for one more round. I move 2 of the remaining three unengaged clads into position to charge Mephiston. The last moves forward. All laserbacks shoot at enemy razorbacks, to absolutely no effect (wait, no, I shook one). Dreads charge Mephiston. He gets his s10 through the hood (*(@%(!), but not his preferred enemy, and he doesn't get anything done. They rip him apart when their turn to attack comes, massacreing to face the enemy. Other dread charged the 10 man assault squad and started chewing them up.
Bottom 2:
Sanguinor jumps up again, next to empty razorback, razors shoot at Ironclad, to no effect whatsoever. Sanguinor kills the razorback on the charge.
Top 3: Rockets away this round from the dreads, taking out two enemy razorbacks and taking the weapon off a third. I turn on the null zone and shoot the lascannons at the Sanguinor, but he makes his saves anyway. The marines get out and fire a hail of bolters at him, 1 wound. The assault squad charges him. He kills 4 or 5, wins combat and I break and escape (wtf? He's init 6!) Only bright bit is that I did a second wound.
Bottom 3: Troops in the north do things that don't matter, basically coming south with meltaguns bared, or diving into terrain if they have no meltaguns. Lasers shoot at Dreads, to no effect (Mr. Fixit has been busy, and all dreads are currently repaired). Sanguinor jumps into a unit of troops, kills 4 and the sarge breaks, then gets caught and makes all his saves. Argh!
Top 4: I feed another unit into the Sanguinor, and am rewarded when they get his last wound. Up north my dreads break the big assault squad and eat up a little one.
Bottom 4: He fails to melta a dread, then kills it with a charge from a 5 man squad with a fist (wtf?).
Remainder of the game is tame, lascannons back and forth, with mine dominant due to twin linked and mobile dread cover.
Final outcome: BA killed 4 dreads, 2 laserbacks, one assault squad (they ran off the board), Pain Train killed Mephiston, Sanguinor, 4 las/plas razors, 2 assault squads
Pain Train wins by one.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Dreadtastic! Always enjoy your lists man, 5 'clads is pretty bombastic. That MotF ever do much for you?
I suppose I should take another look at the BA codex, keep seeing this Sanguinor chap but no idea what he's actually rocking ...

Losing those RBs to the rockets really hurt. Was a good game though.
I've been practicing my 'super hero management' skills.
Been playing guard recently and only focused on staying out combat and not so much of 'getting into combat'
The Sanguinor has a lot going for him, Boss S.. He buffs other squads around him and is eternal warrior, combined with a 2+, 3++ save. The enemy has to focus a lot of their fire on him to take him down.
Next time, 40ke! next time..
Also had three priest in the list - one was corbulo.. other two had combi melta/ LCs

I realy like your list and your reports, thumbs up! Is the assault squad for crowd controle? Maybe you could post some tactical thoughts about your list in the tactics section??

Not to take away from the win, but the BA player made a few mistakes and the lsit is subpar. Having almost 30% of your points in non IC HQ's is a lot.
I am only running 1 HQ in my Hard boys list.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie. |

Nice fight guys either of yall going to Maul in the Mall?
And just an idea there BA I think you need to either cut the Razorbacks and go for more jump pack dudes maybe some Dreads or DC. Or cut the SCs and go more shooty or with dreads. Your list just seems like its split in half unevenly you only have 3 small units assaulting that look like they can get ganked pretty easily by focused fire which is kinda what happened here. Like if you faced some guard you might be in a world of hurt.

Eh. That is why we test. We dissected the game after we were done.
In a KP mission Mephiston 'should' have claimed more than he was worth. I was just sloppy with him. I actually screwed up in a round of combat with the Sanguinor as well opting to attack a unit that had just charged into combat instead of opting to finish off a wounded squad.
I like the list I tried but I do think that I need to replace the jump assault squad with something a little 'harder.'
The 'better' version of this list also doesn't have all those special characters in it. I run these types of list in the basement to get some good idea of capabilities because and vulnerabilities. (isn't that what play testing is for? ) I like playing with those juggernauts.
Had mephiston not been out in the open and had not tanked his initial rolls when he charged the dread I feel like it would have been a much different game. I realistically should have destroyed the dread charging in with re-rolling str 10 attacks, instead I did practically nothing and the lib was able to stroll up behind the dread and repair it. On round 2 of combat Mepheston is facing three dreads.
This is FKE's battle report though. A win is a win.. I think the BA's with the list I took only losing by one KP and me recognizing what I did wrong to never ever make those mistakes again is a win for me
FKE is a solid player and his dread list is deceptively strong.
cajun - yeah, i plan to hit the maul.

Two things.. I wasn't aware Blood angels could take a master of the forge.. It's not in the BA codex - Am I missing something?
Also, I thought a Thunderfire cannon would be cool - but it too is not in the codex, so I assumed I could not take it.
Are these assuptions correct? MoTF and TF cannon are not avalable for BA?

Much as I dislike Space Marines, the Ork inside me smiles when I see Power Fists in Tactical squads. The marines could learn something from the Boyz who never leave home without a PK Nob in their mobs!

The Pain train (C:SM) brought the MoTF not the Blood Angels.

@Boss: The Motf is mostly there to allow me to have 5 or 6 ironclads. He usually gets one or two fixes in each game as well, so that's worthwhile. Every once in a while he either does good fighting with his servitors or gets shot down and costs KP, but most games he's just 1 or 2 dreads fixed.
@Blood_Angel: Indeed, always a lot of fun to go by your place and grab some games. Wednesdays I play a lot of the same folks, so it's nice to branch out a bit on the weekend.
@Skip: The assault squad's role is hard to explain, but they are essential. Basically they accelerate the speed at which the dreads break out of certain combats, and escort the null zone librarian around. They also do late game work contesting things vs. certain flavors of shooting, and every once in a while they hold down a tough guy or powerfist a vehicle.
@jbunny: I've seen heavy character use in every BA list I've played against. My impression is that their characters are worth the points. Could easily be a meta-difference though. I'm going to do an article in the tactics section on this list sometime.
@Cajun: I'm probably going to Maul in the Mall. I always have a grand old time at that tourney.
@Worms: As someone else pointed out, the MotF and TF are SM only. Sorry for writing the report in a confusing manner.
@Pipe: Orks are much scarier for the clads because furious charge makes em S9, which is roughly double the danger for a clad. Still, one sarge isn't likely to pop one on the charge, but it can certainly happen. Orks in general are a very interesting matchup with this list.

Nice report.
Pain Train:
Librarian w/Null Zone, Might of the Ancients
5 ironclads w/ assault launchers, heavy flamer meltagun, 2 hunter killer missiles
3 x 5 man tac squads w/ laserbacks
1 9 man assault squad w/pfist, rhino
1 Master of the Forge w/3 servitors
Note sure if the Pain Train is worth it.
I'd drop the Assault squad and consider a Termie unit with assault cannon.
The BA list was too HQ-heavy, not really my taste.
