Wrong Forum, but the easiest way to beat Tau is too kill them in CC.

Please use the 40k section of dakka for these sorts of question.

Also: Could you provide details on what army you're using, what troops you're fielding, what troops he's using, where you're currently suffering etc.

If as your username suggests, you have orks, I have had great success with battlewagons full of boyz, stormboyz, deffkopas with rokkits and buzzsaws for tank killing, wartrakks with skortchas for killing kroot in the woods and loota units for shooting battlesuits and light vehicles.

Jump men hear tau and lick their lips. the crisis suits have a very hard time getting away from jump men.

And also remember you can probably outshoot him. YOu say he plays deep strike so i assume he uses lots of suits? Take lots and lots of missile launchers. they are the destroyers of the crisis.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Specially these 2. Or spam missile launchers. You guys get them for free right? Take as many as you can and make that Tau fish boy run in fear. Krak missiles are GREAT for the suits, as it causes instant death, AND the frag is perfect for the FW or non suits.

My wife had a single terminator with a powerfist hit my broadside line this weekend. About 10 seconds later, the terminator was lounging around on the wreckage wondering what to put in its place next.

As everyone here has already mentioned, Tau will fold in assualt, pretty much period. I've had a few lucky streaks where crisis suits sandtrap a 3 man bike squad, but that's about the best outcome you can expect as a Tau player in cc.

That, and S8 for ID.

What type of space marines may help for better advice, CC is a good suggestion, but rather generic, if we know more about your army we ca n help more, but yes, close combat is your friend, so make a FAST list that can get to the enemy in a hurry.

Against tau i would certainly entertain bringing a devastator squad full of heavy bolters.

also, unless the tau player has kroot they seem to have a hard time capturing objectives, most people keep their firewarriors shooting at 30" across the table. So keep your head down and try to avoid their rapid fire until a lot of the stinkin xeno's are dead while grabbing the objectives.

The people here advocating Heavy Bolter Devestators against Tau fail 40k forever.

Devestators are only good in Blood Angel armies with Missile Launchers, and even then that bonus is questionable relative to picking up Autocannon Dreadnoughts. Regular Ultramarine Devestators are overcosted and compete with cheapo Predators.

Tau are known for either being semi-mech (Devilfishes are immune to Heavy Bolters), the Fire Warriors mostly being there to score, with Kroot 50-50 in cover, and lots and lots of Crisis and Broadside suits. And Hammerheads.

What *is* recommended for regular Sppace Marines is to spam Bikers, and back them up with Rifledreads. But this option isn't necessarily available to you, is it OP? What army do you have?

You have to rush them as fast as you can. This will help out a lot for sure. Plus you might want to have some scouts to so they can outflank and force him to deploy in a place were he might not have the best fireing lanes.

Assault Marines, Assault Terminators, and heavy bolters. Those three choices can literally defeat anything the Tau army can throw at you.

If you play codex marines then it is alot harder. The best way to beat tau is to close quickly with assault troops. The best marine chapters to beat tau with are blood angels and space wolves. If you play codex make all of your fast attack as assault marines and vangaurd vets. you should also take some devastator squad with lascannons to kill hammerheads and crisis battle suits.

I think you forgot to add Black Templars to your list Ranek, we get shot, get mad, and charge you because of it.
