I'm working on a lizard-themed SW army, revolving around the idea that a vengeful Slaan spirit (Venerable Kroak) has dominated a chapter of marines that landed on his planet and is using them to seek vengeance on the forces of chaos for destroying his physical form..
I plan to have Thundercav riding on Cold Ones, use Skinks as Fenrisians, and have Wolf Lords running around on Carnosaurs. All of these creatures would be from the uncivilized planet that Kroak has been inhabiting. I intend to use Kroak in the army, using the rules for Njal StormCaller (one of the most powerful 40k psykers).
Basically, I need some help with the fluff here. Would this work? Are there any obvious flaws?
Any help would be appreciated.

It is a tiny bit ludicrous, especially the Slaan part, though I am not going to lie, Marines riding Cold Ones would be bad ass.

The manager of my local GW store had his salamanders riding cold ones for some reason.
Probably just for the cool factor.

I think somebody did these to use as a Tau Auxilary but can't remember what he called them or if using as count as or had some rules written up for them. Nice job though.

Forget cold ones for thundercav... use carnosaurs!

And just use salamanders. They like lizards.

And you can buy all the cool add ons from chapterhouse studios.

I think that is a fantastic plan for some conversion work and some really interesting models. Definitely should use the Salamanders for your marines though!

They're Tau Auxillaries. (Tau have more than just Vespid and Kroot in their empire). They count as fire warriors.

OP, I like your idea. I t really delves into the far history of the 40k universe. I assume you know about the Old Ones and the Slaan in 40k? The only controversy I see is that the means by which this chapter is controlled and the methods they employ seem heretical. So perhaps they are loyal to the Emperor but hunted by other Imperials (like the Soul Drinkers).

Because of the last point I made, I think the Salamanders would be a bad choice for this conversion. They are far to codex (though not 100%) and already have grounded fluff. Besides, it'll be better the find a new paint scheme that really works with your conversions!

Thanks for the ideas guys!

The conversions are going really well. I've made one Wolf Lord on a Carnosaur and 5 Cold One TWCs. I've abandoned the Slaan aspect entirely. My only concern is people being upset with the Skinks being used as Fenrisian Wolves.

Does anyone have a better idea for Fenrisians in a lizard themed SW army?

I always thought the Flesh Hounds of Khorne looked reptilian. Painted up and converted, they can be your fenrisian wolf stand-ins.

So, any way we can see your models so far?

I'd guess they're Tarellian, "Dog Soldiers". Tau allies.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

This is a very awesome idea! Great pics despite the quality. Why not look in to using Salamander and Razordon hunting packs as wolves?

I've decided on the Khorne Hounds for Fenrisians. Thanks, Fiend, for bringing them to my attention!

P.S. this thread seems to be leaving the 40k background topic. lol, my bad.

Cool conversations. Its so heretical, yet cool to see. I even prefer this idea to wolf riding.

But of course. In compensation, I would like to see the models when you are done.
