Horrible Hekatrix With Hydra Gauntlets
|
Hi,
I'm looking to start Imperial Guard. It's actually the only Imperial force I would consider - SM are too forgiving, samey and Repetetive, and the whole super-devout nun thing puts me off the SoB.
I have two real aims with my Guard - I want a force where each individual model is coverted, if only mildly. I also want something really unique - after 4 fairly ordinary armies, I want something special. I've had numerous ideas, ranging from Combat Engineering regiments to out-there things like Ad Mech - but in the end, very few things made the cut. Ad Mech are becoming more and more common as people discover tricks to making them easily, and a lot of other Ideas are more 1 in 100 than the 1 in 1000 that i'm looking for. I've trawled many forums for inspiration, but I often find looking for inspiration leads to copying Ideas, not coming up with new ones. In thend, I settled on a couple of concepts, and I'd like to post them up here and see what people think. If you've got any more Ideas, I'd love to hear them too.
Ordo Xenos Inducted Guard
This Idea stemmed partially from the idea that the 99th Elysian were inducted into the Ordo xenos - I like the Idea of an Inquisitor, but of course, it'd have to be unique. The Ordo Xenos seems pretty cool - Fighting 'Nids and Tau and Orks with their different strengths and weaknesses as opposed to just some Daemons or a couple of Psykers gone wrong. The main Pros would be that it allows me to include pretty much anything, but particuarly the more characterful squads like Penal Legions, and also the rock-solid Ordnance and Artillery. The mains cons are that I don't know a whole lot about the Ordo Xenos - I know the Deathwatch are a part of it (although, as i've said I wouldn't include them because thy're Spaz marines) and that obviously they have the powers of the Inquisition - but what else? I've looked on lexicanum and 40k wikia, but they reveal not a lot. IIRC, there's a FW Ordo Xenos inquisitor - but he's not allowed in every game, so I'd need some way to represent him. I'd likely choose the Ordo Mallelus Inquisitor, because of his access to Terminator Armour - for me, this is something that seperate the Ordo Hereticus from the other two - but the Inferno Pistol would make a good stand-in for a captured Eldar Fusion Pistol, and I feel a lot of the Anti-Daemon options in the Daemonhunters codex might be out of place.
Combined Regiment
I've read about the Elysian and Catachan merge in the IG codex, and I think this is a really cool Idea - mergin two totally different regiments to create something entirely new. I would have to decide on what Regiment I would want to merge though - likely the Catachans, as I really like the VehiclePaint scheme for them, and something like the Steel Legion. The Idea of Mech in the jungle sort of appeals to me, and the vehicles would offer plent of conversion opportunities for Saw Blades ad Dozer blades and such. The Pro's would be combining two totally different but both cool ideas into one new whole - I quite like the fluff for the Catachans (Slinking through the jungle, silent and deadly) and If I did start Guard it would be very Vehicle-heavy since i'm quite the treadhead, but I feel It might not be unique enough. It's basically just taking two already established ideas and combining them into one whole.
I'm also looking at other imperial forces such as possibly the Adeptus Custodes! But i'd like your ideas.

Well, if you really want your force to be unique, than not having a lot of information about the are you're in is a good thing.
the inducted Ordo Xenos is really cool, as if not done really well, combined regiments can look like you got two good deals off of ebay and built them anyway.
I've played my IG as inquisition before, and you really don't even need to include allied units. The CCS provides a character and retinue, with plenty of choices to add to it. Force weapons (rods, swords) make great power fist counts as.

I think the combined regiments sounds good, if you can customize to make them blend as one army. Like a cadian models decked out in ghullie suits. Working to adapt in a jungle enviroment.

It could really give you what you want in being a very custiomized army, as well as 1/1000!

I think the first thing you need to do is come up with a look for your army (which you can achieve on every guy and vehicle fairly easily).
For example, catachans with old-fashion gasmask heads (from pigiron) and heavily camoflauged vehicles (PM me if you want some reference pictures) would be a good look.

Me being quite stupid,,I never took originality into account. Quote 'guardsmen,GREEN!' The biggest mistake I ever made. But I have an idea:
Scratch Companies!
If You've Read The Gaunts Ghosts Books Then You'll Know What I Mean When I Say Verghastites but in case you dont ill explain.Verghastite scratch companies fought in guerilla warfare against the chaos scum, they used pickaxes, other mining tools and recovered weapons the scratch companies were built of Men,Women,Teens any body who could fire a gun.
Soooo doo a rag-a-tag army with pickaxes and mining charges!

Ok, it looks like a combined IG regiment is a popular idea. I've settled on the first regiment - Jourgan Dragoons - ut I still need to decide the second. Possibly the Catachans, as they offer conversion opportunties, or maybe some Elysians - airmobile armoured warfare! My main problem with the Elysians is twofold - not only am I not sure how I would convert/represent them in the field, there is a lack of cheap, butcherable bitz for the Elysians to model with! With the Catachans, 2 infantry squads two Chimerae a Primaris and some sort of Heavy Support (Russ? Manticore? Medusa? Deathstrike?!? I probably won't go with Hydras for cost reasons) to fill out the last 150 points or so and I'm done. Elysians would likely require FW models, and afaik, they're fairl one-piece, so they could be hard to convert. Another idea I've toyed with is the Tunnels rats from the 40k rulebook (name escapes me). Mechanised tunnel warfare sounds interesting, but again, i'm not sure how I would convert them, and it sort of precludes the use of most artillery. It would still allow the Medusa, but the Manticore and Deathstrike in particular would be a no-go, which is a shame, because I like the new models. Anyway, comment people!

The Elysians have separate heads, arms and weapons. Nice models but pricey.
You can buy elysian heads with respirators separately (£9 for 12) and they look quite good on cadians (I've done that)

Elysians are no more "one piece" than Cadians.
There's a torso, legs, and weapon arms. Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, and a head of course.
