I just bought Red Dead Redemption, but am waiting to play it as my wife is watching a movie on the TV.

What can I expect from this game? I have heard it is similar to GTA IV, but western themed. It has scored really good reviews according to its wiki.

I also heard that it has a free roaming multiplayer mode, which sounds like an improvement over GTA's free roam. I also heard a bit about some roleplaying elements, which might be interesting. What have you found fun about running in posses?

I'm not very far into it at all, but it's an awesome game. It's not really as much of a gta clone as people say though. For one thing, the baseline of GTA: cars. At least for now, (and presumably for the vast majority of the game) there are no cars. And no, horses are not the same. Persistent law enforcement in the form of bounties, and actual death as opposed to just 'passing out' like in GTA4 are powerful incentives to avoid lawbreaking when possible. There isn't a zoom option while shooting, which I really miss having, but dead-eye more than compensates. The lasso is awesome though. And one thing stands out to me above the rest: the poker. Texas Hold 'Em. Playable in the 1st 2 locations in the game. The poker game is really fun, to the point where it's more of a 'game within a game' than a simple minigame like all of GTA's minigames. I've found myself doing bounties and the like just to get poker money. I used to bust out all the time, but I quickly learned how to play it and now I usually win at it. (note: I didn't know how to play poker before this...)

So if you're holding off on it, get it. It'll feel different for the 1st half hour or so but that's just a learning curve, you'll fall right into the swing of things.

Apparently it's chaos.

But, maybe people will mature with time, as with most other Online modes.

Add me up dudes! I have found that going "lone wolf" is the fastest way to get killed and lynched by a hostile posse.

RDR is a a great game and so much happens in the single player that it is easy to get side tracked from the actual plot line you are supposed to follow. I think I must have played horseshoes for 90 mins the one day before I knew what I was doing.

Multiplayer... well, its cool but as someone mentioned it is pure chaos. I am at about level 13 and our posse ran into 5 guys who were just following everyone on the board and killingthem. It made it impossible to do anything. Needless to say, this gets real old really fast. The most fun is in getting a group together and playing the games against your friends IMHO.

I love the game, I only play private online games though, because people don't realize some people actually want to have fun. I'll add you if you want.
