The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Each Segmentum has its own Battlefleet, which is based at a specific world (don't ask me where...)

Battlefleets are broken up into smaller flotillas and assigned patrol zones.

When there are 100'000 men aboard a battleship, the equipment carried by the helmsman (not pilot) is sort of irrelevant.

And also fighters, bombers, and other smaller aerospace (IE, can operate in both an atmosphere and in space) craft.

So is it about the Imperial navy itself or just parts of it?

"battlefleet gothic" could provide bases and ships.
"double eagle" could provide fluff for navy fighter wings.
"relentless" could provide fluff for long range patrols.
Forgeworld may have examples of painted crews. But so does the dakka gallery too.

Aeronautica Imperialis might have some good stuff on the aerospace craft.

Could be a sign of Chaos Corruption :-)

And yeah Valkyries and Marauders are very cool :-D In any case I also agree that there is not nearly enough Fluff about the Navy. Here are some quick links to sate the first info-hunger:

For the best Fluff about Pilots so far, refer to Double Eagle, as mentioned. A good description about a Valkyrie Crew can be found in Redemption Corps

The violators of the Emperor's law must be punished… how dare they question His will, His judgement… if their deeds go unchecked then chaos will surely rein… I have no choice but to sentence the offenders to death, effective immediately and without appeal… you have your orders gentlemen, may the Emperor's blessing go with you.

The battlefleet gothic rulebook has a heap and can still be bought relatively cheaply from the GW specialist games section of the website.
