Hey guys - I just started a space wolf army, and I picked up the battleforce, and a pack of space wolves to start a good base for the army. I opened my boxes, and goddamn.... There are a TON of pieces in the SW sets! I'm somewhat overwhelmed with where I should start. I wanted to go with a mostly CC army via pods with some shootiness..... So I started off with the space wolf pack box and assembled 2 of them as wolf guards - one with a frost axe/plasma pistol and one with wolf claws and a plasma pistol.... Now I'm stopped and wondering if I'll be going in a good direction with it. Any expert advice on how I should go with the rest of what I have?

Any help really is appreciated!

Thanks!

IIRC, they can't have 2x wolf claws and a plasma pistol too. Just the 2x wolf claws, or a wolf claw and plasma pistol.

I could be wrong, mind you.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Well, I gave him 1 x wolf claw... I'm assuming they must have 2 then?

(just saw that you said or wolf claw and plasma pistol.... also, what is the difference between having one and having two? If you have two does it mean you can reroll your to hit/to wound roll twice? :S )

Thanks!

Having one wolf claw means you can choose to either re-roll all your failed rolls to hit or rolls to wound, but you can't get an extra attack from having a pistol (since lightning claws are extra-special). Having two claws means you get a bonus attack for having two close combat weapons, but no, you can't ever re-roll a re-roll.

Lets look at the big picture here instead of worrying about wolf claws...

Do you have the codex yet? If so take some time to study it and draft up an army list. This will save you the unfortunate experience of assembling models willy-nilly and then realizing you dont have a playable army.

This man speaks the truth. Until you have a codex, you can't really build the units without having some guidelines. You should rest pretty easily though - a lot of the pieces in the Space Wolf kit are just redundant for the sake of looking cool. For instance, there's no difference between a bolter and a bolter with a giant wolf skull on it, and whether or not a Grey Hunter is holding a bolter or chainsword is a non-issue. Get the codex, check the Grey Hunter entry, and get building!

Firstly, thanks a lot for clearing up the 1/2 wolf claw thing. Second, I do have the codex and have read it a fair amount, I just don't know how I should go about creating the army I'm looking for since I've been into warhammer for 10+ years, but only played once because I don't know anyone that's really into it.... Gonna start going to lfgs now though so I want something half decent.

Thanks a lot guys!

In that case, the question becomes: what style of army do you want? The beauty of the wolves is that you can have some very different playstyles represented by the army, which is a significant strength.

Do you want an army that plays like a pack of wolves, working together to bring down larger prey? If so, take grey hunters/Blood Claws in Rhinos, supported by wolf scouts, Long Fangs and speeders.

Do you want a force based around some heavy hitting units? If so, take a thunderwolf Lord, a squad of thunderwolf cavalry and whatever else you need to do the job.

Do you want a drop pod force? Take Grey hunters in pods with plenty of melta/plasma, back them up with some podding dreads, and chant boom repeatedly

At the end of the day, what i'm really saying is, read page 16 of the Space Wolves codex, as well as whatever else takes your fancy(thunderwolf entries, lone wolves, etc...), and build a list that reflects what you think is cool. Post the list on dakka/warseer/bolter&Chainsword (or even all three!) and see what people say to help tweak the list.

Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Well as I said in the opening post, I want to go with a CC army using pods, with some back up shooting. So I'm wondering how I should start working towards this with what I have bought, which I mentioned in the post also.

Thanks again!

might i direct you to: http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/

They have a very good rundown of what works/doesn't work so well, and may also have some ideas that will help. I also believe that they have an example of a 1,500 point pod army, albeit written with the 3rd edition codex. It'd be worth checking out.

With a drop/shooty army, i'd get around 3/4 squads of Grey Hunters, with dual melta/dual plasma, MoTW and Wolf Standard. If you choose to give them wolf guard pack leaders, don't give one to the plasma squads - unlike the melta squads, you're going to want to shoot plasma again, which you can't really do with combi-plasma. Back them up with a squad of termies with combi-meltas and some multi-melta pod dreads, and you've got a fairly hefty drop force that can do a tonne of damage in the shooting phase, then counter-attack.

Get a rune priest/wolf priest as your HQ, and that'll do it. Be warned; you'll need a lot of drop pods.

Also Also dreadnaughts in drop pods are always fun. Head over to the army list forum and look around. Theres even an ongoing dscussion about an SW pod army.

Awesome thanks a lot guys, that helped a lot Ya, it's mostly the weapons that I'm confused about and what purposes they are all best for - but that helped give me a couple ideas. Thanks
