So we had a friendly game (less than 1000pts) which ended bit badly. One side won with massacre and losing side just got mad and started to blame that his army was complete s***. My opinion was that both teams seemed ok and with good tactics either one could win. But my word alone can't convince the losing side to keep collecting his army :( So.. here's the army lists of both sides and small poll. Are these beginner armies balanced or does one have a major advantage over another?

They seem pretty balanced, maybe with the Tau having a small advantage. Against a small slow army like Deathwing a properly built Tau army should do very well. This Tau list is OK, but lacks Missile pods, and Plamsa rifles so a lot of the natural advantage is gone, however I think Tau still have a slight advantage.

I would say, DA are a more difficult starting army, but that tau list doesn't look very good at all, there are several worthless/inefficient options and things that could be adjusted in it to make it better. The Dark Angels are Deathwing, which fails at any point level below 1500, and he Doesn't have a Land Raider, which, while understandable give the points total, really hurts him. I would say, tell the to play a couple of games at the 1500 point level maybe, Tell the Tau Player to trim useless options like the Stealthsuit Fusion Blaster and optimize thing a little more, and tell the Dark Angels player to add a Land Raider, some more Termies and maybe drop the Dred and Tac Squad for another Land Raider.
In short both armies have a steep learning curve, but the Dark Angels especially. If he wants to keep the points total, he needs a Cheaper HQ instead of Belial, Termies as Elites for now and more bodies on the field. Deathwing really just doesn't work in small games. once you get up to 200 or maybe 1500 with my suggestions (though the points total is still hurting the 1500 list) he can try more Deathwing-y stuff.
Also, it would help if you told us who lost, because at the moment i'm guess Dark Angels but if i'm wrong then you want more tau-specific advice.

@ EldarVH: I would say that the Tau lost,as Thunder mentioned "We had a freindly game...", and his ranking is stalwart Space Marine.

In that case, ep, it's just abd Tau list. I would Imagine ye was fielding all the models he had and was trying to make them stretch to fill the points. Cyclic Ion Blaster + Plasma Rifle is far better than CiB and Fusion Blaster. He could trim gun drones, cut all the Shas'vre's down to Shas'ui Team Leaders, Remove the kroot armour and shapers as both are useless upgrades, trim the Bonding Knife from the Shas'o, and maybe use a Shas'el with Targetting Aray for a 15 point saving, He loses the Shield gen, but he can upgrade the Gun Drone to another Shield Drone and use the spare points to get a Disruption Pod for the Devilfish (it should be standard on every Tau vehicle, 4+ cover save for 5pts is fun), maybe trim a few fire warriors and try to get either more Troops or a Hammerhead. Photon Grenades aren't exactly a good upgrade either - The aim is to have your Fire Warriors lose combat, run away so you can shoot the enemy next turn, and if they survive, rally and get back in the fight. Photon Grenades make this less likely to happen, so they're not brilliant.

Yes.. Tau list has more upgrades than supposed to. Mostly to make up the points. Some weapons are in the list 'cause i bought the "army" from a friend and i follow WYSIWYG. So until i get more bits and pieces, those weapon choises have to do. And yes.. i was playing the Tau.

I don't know, those termies are hard as hell to bring down with Tau,and that dreadnought is a pain in the arse with a multimelta.

Is your name shaun,by any chance?

The Tau list is really, really rough. 1 BS and 2 Crisis just won't cut it at 1k points most of the time.

I would say that the DW army easily stomped the Tau army, on the basis of DW Assault alone.

Then again, it could have also gone very badly for the DW player if they tried to outshoot the Tau instead of DSing in and working through assualts - can't see that happening, though.
