My laptop (2.5 years old Dell, running XP) started freezing up this last Friday, and I've been doing lots of stuff to increase performance in the hope that the issue will abate, including lots of scans - McAfee, Spybot, Ad-Aware, couple free registry cleaners. Needless to say, it's not really working, though knocking out some startup nonsense was def needed. But I'm really wondering if I have some kind of malware that isn't being picked up, connected to this error that started to pop up maybe 2-3 weeks back:

Any thoughts on how to fix this error, or if it's related to the freeze-ups? Not a lot of help from Google, which directs me to do some regEdit stuff and look for WildTangent, which isn't the issue here (though my desktop suffered that one )

Cheers for the help crew!

Wasn't there an issue with McAfee a little while ago? If I remember it right it accidentally deleted important system files as it thought they were viruses.

Use AVG or something instead of McAfee

Really? Snap ......... Will look into that.

On YBD's links, neither of those work for me, as the .dll does not appear under services or in the registry. I did score a link to yet another (free) registry cleaner, which has gained me back quite a bit of functionality somehow.

AVG is also free if you were wondering.
