Painted some winged space marines this weekend.
Normally, everyone and his chapter serf has his helmet on, chose to have them bareheaded as I couldn't get me to use
the 'deathmasks'. Now, since there is a reason I don't use heads instead of helmets often, could I get away with those
marines as they are?

Sorry, but that gold just looks too pale and flat. It needs washes. Same with the skin.

I am simply loving those models, really nice paint work on them. They look far more fitting without helmets

Looking very good, needs washes to add the 'depth' to the paint scheme. Even a simple black black wash adds so much to a miniature.

I agree, metallic paints look flat, and sort of like cheap toys without a wash (though your paint job is very crisp and clean, GJ). That said, I love the idea of these guys without helmets and with blond hair/blue eyes. It fits the sorta Adonis thing going on with the armor.

Sadly isn't "un"washed. A bit too bright ( camera ), yes.
Maybe suggest a skin-color - wash combo ?

So always use black or maybe rather brownish washes?

Liked the idea too.
Still can't get faces right....

5 bareheaded , one respirator, one bionic eye, 3 of different facial expressions.
Plus 5 helemeted ones ( but blinged too much, maybe 1 usable )
and 5 death masks (which are bareheaded + face mask, so you got hairs on the rear.

Black, brown ( which one? ) or different color? I don't plan to buy every single wash to try.

Plus, shiny big targets are just there to distract your eldar ranger...

Thanks
Appreciate your thoughts so far, maybe a hint on the washes?

With gold, use black, brown, purple or red?
Black seems fine to add dirt ( jumppacks ), the other move the gold to red IMO.

With bare skin, start pale and darken it?
Use brown -ish washes at skin?

you should wash the metallic parts in black or brown and you need to rework your flesh because it blends in with the metallic colors too much. Try using a base shade that is darker than your original flesh coat.

I prefer brown washes to black though.

Depends on where abouts your putting the wash. But with your models I suggest a medium shade brown wash over gold and a black wash over metal (I cant do flesh, so don't ask!). Don't take my word on anything though, im still learning.

strangely enough, the nipples don't bother me *as much* as the toes on the armor. somehow, that irks me more than the nipples as they can really easily be filed off but the toes would need to be green stuffed.

Looks good. I would recommend making the gold a little more bold and maybe highlighting the edges of large armor peices. You could also do a little washing to give the peice a little more depth. However so far it looks really nice and the flag is neat and well done. Keep up the good work!

Well a simple wash of Ogryn Flesh would be a good start.
