Hi all! Second post, and it's been a while since my first!

My plan was to start a thread for the Red Scorpions I started work on, and my Imperial Guard that I was about to start. Well the Imperial Guard kinda took over, done hardly anything with the Red Scorpions but they're sat there ready to be worked on. Also found out last week that my application for GW's "Become Legendary" programme was accepted, and on Sunday I move down to Bristol from Manchester to begin work as a trainee manager. So I'm also going to be starting a Warhammer army next week, though at the moment I'm having a hard time deciding which army to go for. Main contenders are Warriors of Chaos, Dwarfs, Dark Elves and Empire. But then some of the new Orc models are so tempting....

Anyways, onto what I've already got on the god. First up my Imperial Guard, the Manceinion 103rd. I love the idea of masses of basic infantry being ordered into battle against the horrors of the galaxy, backed up by battle tanks and artillery. I've made a start fleshing out the background on the Manceinion 103rd, which I'll write up properly and add to this thread later, but for now a brief overview.

Manceinion is a large, industrial planet, with large hives housing the working population of the planet. Outside the industrialized areas, the hills and mountain ranges have largely been exploited through mining and quarries, to extract the various valuable minerals abundant below the surface.

The exhausted open-cast mines provide ideal training grounds for open battle tactics for the Manceinion regiments, and the rough hives supplying an abundance of urban law enforcement and population control scenarios to test the regiments in confined spaces, and simulated hive deployment scenarios are regularly run in the disused networks of mine shafts and tunnels. As a result, the Manceinion regiments are well versed in a variety of combat styles before they are taken off-world for deployment in protection of the Imperium.

Currently the Manceinion 103rd forces consist of a company command squad, 2 platoons, 1 featuring 2 infantry squads and a heavy weapons squad, the other 3 infantry squads and a heavy weapons squad, 2 armoured sentinels, a standard Leman Russ, and a Leman Russ Punisher (yet to be assembled). My plan is to build it up into a sizeable force, and I have to say Spearhead now means I'm going to have to seriously bulk up on the armour! I suspect elements of the Manceinion Super Heavy Regiments will have to be added to the force as well.....

Later this evening I shall get some WIP photos sorted for the models in the process of being painted, some near-completion, to show the schemes I have in mind for the army. Pretty basic, boring colours I'm afraid, suited to urban and industrial combat, grey fatigues with black armour for the troops, plain black or black and grey camo for the vehicles.

Next week I'll update with the start of the Warhammer army (whichever army it happens to be!) which will be my main focus for the following weeks due to the upcoming release of the new edition of Warhammer!

Also anyone in Bristol, give me a shout!

Don't really know any of 'em yet, still in Manchester. I'm heading down there Sunday, and start work on Monday, looking forward to it. Hopefully see you in there sometime soon then! And I'll make sure I have a nosey at your stuff this evening!

Well I've got through the first 6 pages of your main thread, and wow. I'll be pestering you for some tips mate! And now onto my below-par stuff!

All these units are still WIP, and my painting leaves a lot to be desired. I've had a long break from the hobby, before which my painting was utterly useless. Now I'm a bit older I've got a bit more patience, but I'm trying to pick up techniques like highlighting so they're all still a bit rough and ready.

Platoon Command Squad:

Company Command Squad (early stages WIP, regimental standard colours tie in to the name, anyone guess how?):

Sentinel:

Leman Russ (loads left to be done, finish painting, weathering etc):

Very nice army.

I too, am living in Briz. I rarely go into the GW, but have been considering it to expand my range of opponents.

Just my fear of standing opposite a 15 year old kid prevents me really, no offense to younger dakkites, but I don't want to be lurking about like a scary basement dweller, arguing the rules with a nipper, when I'm a 33yr old professional.

I know they have a weeknight thing for grownups, must try it out.

Anyhow.

Your models are looking good, I do like the simple gray and black. A mate of mine has a similar effect on his imperial guard, painted as Macragge (sp) PDF to go with his ultras.

Thanks for the response, nice to hear from someone else in Bristol, hope to see you both in GW sometime soon.

Yeah I like the idea of the grey and black for the basic grunts. Considering some form of camo for the storm troopers when I get round to doing them, and maybe for any veteran squads I put together as well.

How's about doing the stormies as a tribute to the original 'blast goggles' necromundan spiders, with tigerstripe camo trousers? (image thanks to kid_kyoto)

That's a nice looking camo pattern, definately a contender. Need to decide whether to use the standard storm trooper figures, or go for the Kasrkin. I like both, already have some of the standard models, but the more I look at the Kasrkin....

Also I have today made the final decision for my Warhammer army, it's going to be Warriors of Chaos, with a Slaanesh theme. I'm committed to it now!

those are pretty nice i must say! though your not just going to leave the bases grey are you? i do like the extreme highlights on the sentinel. have you thought about doing any weathering or are you going for the pristine look?

Sticking with grey for the base colour, but will be adding sand/rock/paving/industrial detritus etc when I get round to it. As for the weathering, it's something I definately want to have a crack at, don't think an urban/industrial world Guard detachment would look pristine for long. So I'm going to start doing my research on weathering techniques, and have a go at the sentinel and the leman russ together.

The best book for really effective weathering techniques is the forgeworld imperial armour painting masterclass book. and the idea for the bases sounds good. some etched brass can also look nice on urban bases.

also with the weathering; it's worth just experimenting with stuff like weathering powders and oil paints etc.

Might pick that up on Monday then, give me something to read whilst I'm living in a hotel. If it's as good as the Forgeworld sourcebook I've got (The Anphelion Project) it'll be worth having. Also thinking of grabbing one of the GW basing kits, probably grab the Warhammer set initially as I'll be working on my Chaos Warriors first, and if it's any good I'll get a 40k set for my IG.

Don't know if someone caught it yet, but the colors match Manchester City's strip, right? And Manceinion is Manchester in Welsh.

Painting looks pretty sharp, especially the highlighting on the sentinel. Keep it up.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I was happy with how the sentinel came out, still need to work on the highlighting on the troops but it's getting there slowly.

Thanks for the feedback! Will get more photos up ASAP, could be a while for my Guard stuff though as I'm now in Bristol and all my stuff is in Manchester, had no way of carrying it along with everything I NEEDED to carry.

Chaos Warriors went out the window, they didn't have a box in stock so I went for my close 2nd choice, Dark Elves. Gonna make a start on them tuesday/Wednesday. First task before my first day in work on Tuesday is read through the new Warhammer rulebook and get my head round the rules!

About time for an update!

Assembled the Dark Elf spearmen, once the weekend is out of the way I'll take those into work to get them undercoated (don't think the hotel would take kindly to me spray undercoating in the room...) along with anything else I manage to get ready by Monday. Started assembling the repeater crossbow unit, then just the Corsairs and Cold One Knights to prepare.

The spearmen unit is definately going to need a boost in it's numbers, 12 just won't do! Probably going to go for horde option, so ranks 10 wide, and at least 4 ranks thanks to the benefits for horde and spears allowing 4 ranks to attack! Stabby stabby! Throw in Eternal Hatred, and I get to upto 40 attacks with re-rolls in the first round of combat

Pictures to follow probably tonight, not working in the store today so should get chance to do some more assembling once I get back from exploring Bristol!

Was good to meet you a couple of days back, sorry I wasn't more with it, just got out of a 4hour management meeting and still haven't perfected sleeping with my eyes open yet. Plus I find that GW store hot as hades during summer.

Go take a stroll round St Nicks market and a wander down Welshback way. Plenty good pubs down there. The Crown in St Nicks (the game will be on there tonight) and The King William on King Street are both great.

Grats on the Dark Elves, I was highly impressed with Jes G's cold ones when he redid them, made me feel very sorry for the lizardmen players when I saw what they got instead...

You're right about the heat in the store. Yesterday it was really bad. Was cool to see you too, was nice to have an excuse to get my head out of the training manuals for 10 minutes!

Popped into the market hall on Monday on my initial explore, definately a place I'll be going back to for a more detailed look. Bit restricted at the mo on cashflow until I get paid, but after that I'll properly immerse myself into local pubs and such! Might treat myself to a couple tonight for the match though.

Yeah the new cold ones are stunning models, can't wait to get them assembled and painted. Just need to try to decide on a colour scheme, trying to avoid the standard black and purple that seems to be so common. Want to go for something a bit more colourful but still obviously evil...

Time for a couple of shots of the Dark Elves! Nothing amazing, just assembled minis.

First up we have the unit of spearmen (or should that be spearelves?). Currently only 12 of them, this is going up to at least 40 to get the combined benefits of a horde unit and spears.

And then we have the first half of the repeater crossbow equipped unit. The second half are almost assembled now (took the pics earlier) but it's getting too dark in here to sort pics out. Whatever I've got left over from the extra boxes I buy to boost the spearmen will probably be assembled with repeaters to be added to this unit, current unit size is 16.

Picked up a Dreadlord today, so once I've got the contents of the battalion box assembled and painted, along with him I'll have a playable force. However it'll soon be growing, and I've got big plans! Had some inspiration for some colours too, and I'm hoping to have everything assembled by Monday so during lunch I can get them undercoated. So fingers crossed towards the end of next week I'll have at least one unit painted up!

Looking good so far. I've never been too keen on dark elves, but I'm eager to see how they turn out. As for the color scheme, googleimage returned this:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/evil%20elves/BloodRayne200/20060324_428_elves22.jpg
Black armor, greyish skin, pale gold for trim and hair, maybe a dark red thrown in? Fairly bright but still menacing.

I hope your move to Bristol is going smoothly. Sadly I remember little of the city because I got very sick the one evening I was there and had to stay in bed while my friends painted the town red.

Cheers for the comments.

Now I do like that colour scheme. If I have a quiet day tomorrow I might paint one of the warriors up in that kinda scheme to see how it works out. I know more or less how I'm doing the Cold Ones, going for an Ice Blue base for the skin, with darker blue scales, with patterns marked out again in Ice Blue. So they'll look like very cold ones....

Got the contents of the battalion box assembled now, and the spearmen and repeater crossbowmen are undercoated. So hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get a picture or two up of a model done in those colours. Then I can crack on with the whole army! Not adding any more units until this lot is painted up, I SHALL be disciplined! (for now...)

Settling in nicely in Bristol. Had a couple of days to mooch about the place now, and I'm loving it. Also helps that the weather has been awesome. Looks like I've got a room sorted in a house share now too, so get to move out of this hotel!

Firstly massive apologies for the delay in an update! Been busy with work, now working at Cribbs Causeway, been on holiday, and don't currently have proper internet access (this update brought to you by my phone!).

So sadly no photos to upload today, but I will get some done ASAP! On the plus side nearly all my GW stuff has now come down to Bristol from Manchester. So my IG and Red Scorpions will be worked on again, along with my new Witch Hunters and my Dark Elves.

On the Dark Elf front, I now have 2000 points assembled and undercoated, with parts of the army in various stages of being painted. Still toying with the final colour scheme though! Also got various older boxes of stuff (such as the old Cauldron of Blood, which I prefer over the new one), and and blisters of Executioners (thankfully the same models as the ones in the new boxes), along with 12 of the old metal Corsairs. Incidentally if anyone has any of those lying around that they don't want, get in touch, I need another 7 or 8! Probably got another 1.5-2k ready to be assembled :-D

So this week I will endeavour to get some shots and get into a cyber cafe to get them online. Played a couple of games with them now, best one so far against Skaven, great fun with the new rules.

Updates soon (I promise!)
