I'm painting some SM Scouts, and I'm wondering - how do I paint the white cloth's shadows and folds with wash to shade it, while still keeping them looking white, and not washed out & grungy? I've never had any luck with this.

I'd suggest going back and dry brushing white over your wash and essentially highlighting to bring the white back out.

My recipe for white cloaks/clothing with brownish shading is:

- base coat with Khemri Brown
- wash with gryphon sepia
- over brush all but recesses with komando khaki
- highlight with bleached bone
- same with bleached bone : white (1:1)
- same with white

For white armour I typically do a more blue-ish shading...

You could try to paint them light gray and then highlight in white, or paint white, dilute your ink a lot and apply it in layers only in the dark zones, instead of washing the whole pant.

Paint it white the make a wash (add water until it's nearly transparent then a drop of washng up liquid) out of some grey paint and paint this over the area, being careful to let it pool in the recesses.
