Subject: Flyers in 40K and Apocalypse are they any good?

I have yet to play with any flyers with the new rules....back in the VDR days I ran them sometimes. Are they too powerful for normal 40K games? I'd love to pick up some of the Smaller Eldar Flyers. Any thoughts?

It depends on the flyer, and the job you want them to do. The Nightwing is intended as an anti-aircraft vehicle, so it is not ideally suited to 40k. It's home would be Apocalypse, where it is more likely to include other flyers. The exception would be the FW IG Vulture. It now counts as a skimmer, in the same way as a Valkyrie, and reverts to a Flyer in Apocalypse. I run a themed list, and use a pair of them in place of conventional armour. They don't seem too overpowered to me, roughly as difficult to shift as a Russ.

well I dont like normal flyers because they cant hold objectives but the thunderhawk gunships are good because they can switch to a mode where they can hold objectives

I'd like to get away from the Fire Prisms and Wraithlords and run support aircraft they are heavy support and feel really cool list wise.

I don't own aircraft and have only faced one of them once, it was the nightwing interceptor and I that is definatly a major anti-air vehicle.
I love the idea through and I've been toying with the idea of splashing out on a vulture which I would magnatise.

I'm calling you out on that. Direct quote, with full title, author, chapter and page number before I believe it.

Correction: They can switch to a mode where they can hold objectives WHEN CARRYING A SCORING UNIT.
They can make themselves follow the skimmer rules instead of the flyer rules, thanks to the "Hover" special rule that they have. They still need to be transporting a scoring unit, though, in order to count.
They can, however, contest an objective by themselves and in an apocalypse game that's using VPs to decide who has control of which objective, a thunderhawk is a BIG chunk of points to help cancel out enemy presence.
Back to the OP, I believe flyers are very strong if used correctly. When staying out of range of anti-tank weaponry, forcing the enemy to need 6's to hit with heavy weapons is a real boon. It can take a lot of firepower just to down a basic armor 12 flyer, making them hard to kill. They can also get great LOS to anything on the board and reposition to almost anywhere. But beware enemy anti-aircraft flyers. The little things like the Nightwing and the Hell Talon might not be very good, but they're VERY good at taking down flyers much larger than themselves, so watch out for those.

I think I can see your mistake now; the Apocalypse rules were written in 4th Edition, where vehicles could capture objectives. Nowadays it is only troops that can capture objectives, rendering that rule void.
The Thunderhawk's transport capacity and Hover mode does give it a significant advantage towards last turn objective grabbing though.

Flyers are okay, they're tough to kill but tend to be lacking in firepower for their points (true of a lot of FW stuff).
