This is my first post on this (or any other) forum, so bear with. I've been involved with 40k since Rogue Trader and in minis since before that. I remember (and still have) my original beakies and Imperial ARMY figs. I also remember when there were 3 GW shops in England, and that was it. The states was all mail order or getting lucky at a hobby store if you wanted Citidel minis. I have never played a game, ever. Just never interested me. I guess I got enough of that being in the real military. I have an unknown amount (no count, but enough to make my wife shake her head, probably 2000 plus over the years) of 40k figures that I just like to paint and convert.
I wanted to comment on the Imperial Army uniform from the Trader days, and how some folks scoffed. Here are some things to remember. This was pre-Alien, and although they don't look all that great today, they were far and away sci-fi looking compared to real combat gear (trust me, I wore it). Mad Max was in vogue and there were actual people on the streets of London with huge mohawks and leathers. These all played a part in the design, I'm sure. RT was more of a role player than 40k, so big units weren't fielded and you could actually have a squad of individuals, all different and recognizable. Also, what people don't realize is that the RT figures were designed to look a bit cartoonish, that was the charm. But they beat out 90% of the other tabletop figures of the day. This was pre-laser and computer designed mold technology, so the plastic details were pretty good for the day, on par with Tamiya, etc. on the military plastics side. Got nothing against the newer ones, either. They're just different from each other.
I'd like to see them upgraded by GW as Necromundan units, keeping to the same basic design, but ditch the huge cargo pockets and the mammoth zippers on the flak armor and detail them out. Probably wouldn't hurt to put butt-stocks on the Mk1 or 2 las-rifles they carry. I'd also like to see just a basic figure in plastic that could be converted with seperate heads, gear, etc. so the entire guard does not look like Cadians in different colors. GW could produce the basic figures and then sprues of accessories to finish them out. And this would give GW one more line of money magnets. Of course I'd like to have GW give me these for free, too, while I'm on the subject of what I'd like to see.
Glad to see the original Orks go, though. The new ones are so much better. Again, the target consumer was about 10 or 11 years old so it's understandable.
Two last items. In the illustration on the box of the plastics, the unit is Necromundan but it has to be post heresy. The flag shows Saint Pious and according to Guard lore he attained sainthood by being at the Emporer's side when he confronted Horus. Supposedly drew fire and saved his life. That is some old, old fluff for you youngsters. They are being supported by Land Raiders because that's the only vehicle in production by GW at the time. The Rhino had just come out (3 models per box for 19.95) but if you wanted anything else it was scratch-build time (which was really encouraged by GW at the time, to be fair).
Time to climb down off my soap box. I look forward to being involved with Dakka.
