For the Dire Avernger Exarch wargear, the Diresword seems to take the middleground between the 2 catapults and the simmershield. Is the Diresword worth taking?

its good against low leadership multiwound models like Ork nobs in squads of less then 8.

at 2/3s the cost of a normal power weapon while counting as one its pretty cheap too. the fact it comes with a pistol is a bonus.

Never, ever use it. Your DAs will still not do well in any combats. Of all the multiple wound models you could use its special ability on: most have LD9-10; most need a 5+ or 6 to wound roll; your opponent is not going to use them to assault the diresword unit if they are really at risk; if you do assault them, and fluff the dice, your DA unit is toast.
