What do you think off inquisitorial Priests?

I have never before used a priest but i think it would be hilarious to have 5 in a command squad with all the advisors and bodyguards.

Crap now i suddenly want to make a penal legion force of 5 priests and a Lord Commisar and 5 squads of legionnaires

I've never used them, so I can't speak from experience, but that Eviscerator is pretty tempting. I figure that as Independent Characters, they could be a fairly inexpensive bonus to any unit that can't take a Commissar but could use a Ld boost, such as the aforementioned Penal Legions, or massive blobs of Conscripts.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.

Well, they are normally a free KP because people use them as nobs with klaw, but forgot its Independent Character so they get owned before they even strike with their eviscerator. Think then: 5 in a command squad with all the advisors and bodyguards it's 6 killpoints, in an unit that any serius CC unit will own before they even strike.

They are useful in big CC mobs, such as 30 guards, comissar with energy weapon and sarges with energy weapons too. Hide it in the middle or the back of the mob, so it can still grant its abilities to the mob without dying too fast. If you are scared of walkers, get meltabombs for sarges: better than eviscerators (thinking the risks you take). Add Straken close and voila! Little guards into furious punchy guys!

And dont use conscripts... 4 points for crap guys, when you have 5 points good guards? I take 300 guards before any conscript in any place in any world, even in fluff lists. Period.

Hope i helped!

The Eviscerator may look nice, but independant characters that strike at I1 are usually singled out in close combat before they get a chance to strike. Even more so when the IC is T3 and only has a single wound.

Which only leaves trying to pop vehicles in melee, and it's not like IG really have trouble popping vehicles through better means.

I think, as i said, its only useful as a bonus to CC mobs, and it being well hidden, and vanilla priest of course!

If I may chime in again, I plan on including an Eviscerator Priest alongside my Demolition Vets, who'll ride in a Vendetta and hunt vehicles. It's not at all necessary, but it's fun, gives the Vets a CC boost for finishing off squads post-Demo Charge, and is fluffy, since my army is Skitarii-themed and the "forward combat engineers" need an Electro-Priest to escort them.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.

What about using them in penal legion squads

Eviscerator priests are worth taking.

The priest itself is able to do very, very unfortunate things to vehicles it comes across, and the reroll means that it's even likely to land a hit on a vehicle at cruising speed. As well, it can do some serious crunchiness against big scary things which are also I1 (like terminators and MCs, etc.).

However, what the most valuable part of a priest is is his rerolls that he gives to everyone else. A 30x blob with three power weapons kills 5 marines on the charge while that same blob with a priest (assuming the priest doesn't make it into combat) kills 8. That's the difference between tarpitting a tac squad and wiping one out straight away.

Given its cost, difficulty to use, and the fact that it throws another KP on the table, it's drawbacks prevent a priest from being a "duh" choice, but it's ability to score three 18's for armor penetration and boost the ability of the rest of the squad makes it worthwhile if used appropriately.

Appropriately?

HQ
Lord Commisar-Power Fist, Carapace Armour-95

3xPriests-Evicerator-180

Troops

3xPenal Legion-240

Veteran Squad-2xSniper Rifles, Grenadiers-110

Heavy Support

Basilisk-125

Total-750

This would likely be used in a doubles with CSM

A priest goes to a squad that gets a close combat ability.

The veterans Guard the Basilisk

The Lord goes with a sqaud of legion so the squad has ld10 stubborn

I converted a really nice priest with shotgun and eviscerator and I tend to play him in a penal legion squad in a valkyrie. He keeps them from being tarpitted by a walker and allows them to threaten other vehicles (or he can use them to absorb shots then head off after a vehicle while they assault an objective). Maybe not the most effective use of kill points and points in general, but he is fun and has his uses.

ps. I keep thinking Alien 3 when I field them, the religious fanatic prisoners...

Appropriately, as in taking medium quality weapons and making them good. For example, pairing one with an SO with a power fist, or putting one in a blob with at least 3 power weapons. SOME of the penal legion options go well with priests, but not ALL of them, which means that you're going to have to do an early game IC shuffle with the possibility of putting them all in one squad or having no place good to put them.
