Subject: Independant character and skimmer questions

1: Can more than one independant character join a unit?
2: Can a skimmer 'land' to use terrain as cover? Here are some scenarios to solidify the question -
Say I had a stormraven loaded up with a drednaught and marines. I'd want to keep the thing protected as long as possible to get its payload into enemy lines. Could it land after it moved to use trees and such to give it a cover save (ie take it off it's tall base)?
Say after I dumped some marines off I wanted to shoot something with it, I assume since the movement phase is before the shooting phase that if I wanted to shoot something the SR would have to have LOS to the target at the time of shooting, as such it would have to lift off and stay in the air to fire. This of course would mean it's still in the air during my opponent's shooting phase leaving it open to apprisal - right?
So basically can skimmers hop around the play area until they are ready to do something that requires LOS from them, to something?
Thanks

1: Yes
2: No, unless otherwise specified by the army list. For example, Tau tanks have landing gear as a wargear option that, well, allows them to land if they didn't move.

1) Yes. 2) No. At least not removing its base without a special rule. It can be placed in terrain (generally with a dangerous terrain test), however. editing to add: kirsanth too slow.

1. An infinite number of independent characters can join a unit.
2. There are no rules allowing you to modify the model by removing its flight stand during the game.
Automatically Appended Next Post: From the simultaneous answer spree, did third or fourth edition actually have rules for landing skimmers?
Looking at a copy of Tau Empires just now, the landing merely gives the vehicle the option to "no longer count as a skimmer", and doesn't actually give permission to remove the flight stand.

Ok so allow me to ask a dumb question. Is it legal to simply field a skimmer with a hacked off pole (what's that thing called?) so it's closer to the ground? Or simply dont even use a base and say 'the skimmer is skimming 1 foot off the ground, and won't leave the ground for the fight'? You then won't be modifying the model during the battle.
Maybe the rules don't allow for this, I just think its extraordinarily dumb that a skimmer cant get real close to the ground during its movement phase.. it makes sense tactically.

Sure. My Tau skimmers come with really short poles (1inch or so)...It won't affect any of it's game rules other than line of sight for shooting.

immobilize or destroy a skimmer and it says to remove the base if it's not glued in. (not this case of course but there are rules to allow you to modify the model by removing the flight stand)

Can you make the skimmer taller by putting a longer stick on it? I'm considering doing that so i can shoot over things.

By RAW, a model must be modelled on the base with which it is supplied.
In practice, most people don't care. Be aware though that making your skimmer flight stems taller or shorter does have in-game consequences. Shorter stems mean that they can hide behind terrain better, but also restricts the skimmers own LOS over obstacles. Taller stems mean they they can see over obstacles better, but obviously can also be seen easier, and can potentially run you into issues with dis/embarking and objectives.
