Working in a GW shop to get off his gambling addiction! That's a nice one!
And I assumed, he needed the cash for a new Warhammer army! What a waste!
BTW nice first post! Welcome to Dakka!

I live near Sunderland, and can vouch that this is pure bs. There is absolutely no way he stole £8000!
For a start, the Mackems don't have that much money between them.

Thanx for the welcome.
The shame of it all is he was actually one of the best GW staff I've encountered .
I used to leave my kids there when he ran the old Sunderland store about 10 years ago when they followed me into the hobby (they are 19 + 17 now so I don't hold their hands anymore!)
We now also have 2 more sons who are now 7 + 5 , and there are quite a few GW stores I wouldn't allow them to hang out at but I would have left them there with him in a few years (so much for parental judgement!).
But he had built up a canny little scene at that store , no elitism , people helping and encouraging new gamers , a nice vibe overall .
I suppose he would never have tried it on ifit wasn't for the 1 person stores that seem to be popping up everywhere now , just hope whoever takes over can keep the place welcoming and together.

I was clearly being very serious. The entirety of Sunderland doesn't have £8000 pounds between it, so he he couldn't have stolen that much. Srsly.

The amount of money indeed seems quite high for a store to have around and go missing for so long without it being detected sooner, but the articles are a bit unclear about the period of time. The first mentions the money being taken between october and november of last year (8000 pounds in one month? I don't think so) and the other has the money being taken between october and january, which is more likely because that is about four months and the holidays are included in it as well.
I have heard of stories like this before. Someone manages the money for a club, store, etc, and thinks to borrow the cash to make a profit gambling. The borrowed cash will be replaced and nobody will notice. In reality the profit ends up a loss, more money is used in attempts to make up for those losses, and that is where things start to fall apart.

If he stole cach from october til november it´s 60 days. 8000 pounds in total it means he would have taken about 130 pounds a day. Does it sound so unrealistic, not to me. Because if i had a store that rendered that little money everyday I would have to close it fast. Remember that GW is not a charityinstitution, they can´t have stores that don´t keep the cash flowing in.

Rightho. I think something needs explaining to our non-English friends. There is a fierce local rivalry between the people of Newcastle and Sunderland. A Geordie will take every opportunity to rip the piss out of a Mackem and vice versa. This is what is going on here, though it appears anyone outsaide of the UK does not seem to be in on said poster's joke.

Funny, I worked GW retail back in the early 90s. Worked with a really nice manager, had great respect for the guy. He transferred (to the Oxford street store) and got me transferred with him.
And then got arrested. Turns out he'd been borrowing money from the till to go gambling and when he lost, persuaded his girlfriend to cover it. And then she dumped him and he couldn't put the cash back.
Maybe GW should just put their prices up so they can pay their staff a decent amount.

You'd be surprised, I know of a GW store that lost all of the cash they took in for their Christmas sales (which was probably about $14K) to a sticky fingered manager several years ago.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |
