A model has a points value assigned to it. The higher a units points value the better its battlefeild worth.

Expect my posts to have a bazillion edits. I miss out letters, words, sometimes even entire sentences in my points and posts.

Welcome. Basically 40k works like this. Each player chooses an army to collect. For example Bob might choose Space Marines and Willy Orks. Bob will buy the Space Marine codex and Willy the ork codex. A codex is a book which has all the rules that are special to each army. It also has a list of all the types of unit it can field and apoints cost for each unit.
Bob and Willy then agree a points total for the battle they want to fight. A 500 point battle will be a small skirmish while 3000 would be a major battle. Each player then chooses units upto the agreed points total.
There are other rules about what you can include, and these will be found in your codex.
The best way to start is to get down to your local GW or Independant store and see which army you like the look of, then by a codex for this army and (with the help of people on here) choose enough units to make a small army, say 500 points. Once you've played with this you will have a good idea what you want to add to it to make it a bigger force.
good luck.
