What is the best wargear and upgrades to give to your Hive Tyrant?

I was planning on a 1500 point swarm Nid army. I need him to be a good support for my troops and for the life of me I can't see why a shooty Tyrant is usually preferred.

If I was to take a gun, Stranglethorn cannon with the large blast and pinning with S6 out-shines the HVC.
