I've played 40k for a while now and I'm considering getting a fantasy army. My playstyle tends to be a bit erratic and insane. I thought about doing skaven since I like how they look but would they fit my playstyle? I tend to build armies around a particular leader and this guy will be what I go with should I choose them.

Yeah, erratic and insane, sounds like Skaven, but more so O&G.
Around a particular leader...SC wise, yeah, you could do Queek, or you could go O&G and go with Gorbad.

Brettonians seem cool. That's what I'll play if I start up fantasy. Tomb kings are cool too.

@Karon: I thought about O&C but I play Orks with 40k. I figured it would be a lot more of the same. I'm hoping Queek is good but not super cheesy. I played Vulkan and all flamer/melta in 40k so bringing the cheese lost a lot of fun really quickly.

Queek isn't cheesy. Powerful, and has an awesome model, but rather expensive. His ability is really cool too if you have the (lots of) points.

Queek isn't cheesy. I don't think most Fantasy groups are as quick to allow special characters as 40k groups, but then if that's the case for you, you could always just run him as a warlord.
The only thing you have to accept as a skaven player is that you'll be doing a lot of painting- be it slaves, clan rats, or giant rats, you really can't get away from doing a lot of models.
So long as you're prepared for that, I'd say go for it.

Yes, brace yourself! A good idea might be to pick up a box of skaven clanrats and see how the painting process feels to you, work out a way of doing it assembly line with mostly washes, etc.
I think with the troops I would definitely find a spray for the base color. Then paint a solid color on their garments, metal color on their weapons, and cover the whole thing in a wash (such as devlan mud). If your process is too involved, it'll take too long, and you'll get discouraged in the project.
I got discouraged before even starting to paint skaven . I also think a number of their units are a bit overpowered, so if you want to stay away from complaints, you might steer clear of a few things like the hell pit abomination!
I played black templars in 3rd edition 40k, when they were extremely overpowered ( imho). I won almost every friendly game, but people didn't have fun playing against my army. It wasn't my fault, but it did make it less fun! So if you choose skaven, get the army book, read through some lists about them, and pick an army that won't draw peoplel's ire.

To Piggy back on the thread, I was thinking about starting as well. Mostly for the modelling aspect but I do like to play when I get the opportunity. Is the Empire/Bretonia competitive in a friendly fight? I see endless threads championing Skaven or Lizardmen so Im assuming the're FoTM right now, but Im nore of a Renfaire-fluttering banner- Save the Queen kind of guy

Bretts are struggling right now (low second tier), and if the propsed changes go through in 8E their plight may just get worse. Empire is also a second tier army, but a strong second tier and not as likely to suffer under the proposed 8E changes.
But since we don't yet know 100% for sure what the new rules will be (and what if any updates to old armies will be included in the new BRB), it's hard to tell where everything is going to shake out.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will mostly be playing friendly games and since I have 5 40k armies (ones even painted) I don't think adding one more army to the mix will be too big of a pain for me. I'll go ahead and wait until after the new book comes out before I invest anything just in case a particular unit becomes instantly obsolete.
