Subject: Chaos Daemons: Tips and tricks for the newbie?

Anybody play Chaos Daemons at any real length? Since I've been getting out of tyranids, I wanted to try something else. Something appeals to me about daemons... maybe it's the invul saves all around.
I have a guard army, pretty much your standard mech army. I have HUGE army of space marines, admittedly blood angels (since the free pdf I might add), that can be run in pretty much any style a marine army can run in except for drop pod assaults and bikers. I'm trying to do something different, to replace the tyranids that I just no longer enjoy.
I've got a couple projects underway to try and start up a decent sized daemon army, but I could use some pointers. Should I go mono-deity and choose only one patron, or should I go the route of a Black Crusade and have representatives of all the dark gods? I'm not looking for an ultra competitive army, as I have decent enough competitive armies, but I would like it to not get slaughtered.
Right now I'm leaning towards the mixed approach. I am thematically drawn to a Khornate force, because I like the raw violence of it (and I guess I just like painting the color red), but the chance to get a sample of all these great models in a single force is just too good to pass up. If I am lucky, I might also be rewarded with some new plastic models in that range before the year is up.
What do you all think? What are some good units to start with? A sample 1000 point list that is semi-competitive but yet a bit fluffy?

They fit on the mishap table
Daemons can be a real pain in the ass and have some nasty units at their disposal. However, relying on deep strike for the whole army cuts their effectiveness really bad. I'd put them pretty much in the middle on the competitive scale.

When they land, shoot them. Spread out alot to force possible mishaps. Shoot units with icons. Profit.

Please read the OP guys, I'm asking for tips. I'll change the title, since it is a bit misleading, but really you guys should read the first post before answering.

I'm moving in the opposite direction that you are Foxphoenix. I have played demons for awhile now and am moving on to start a tyranid army.
Both armies appeal to me for some of the same reasons. They both are very underestimated by alot of people, and they both are very unforgiving. I think both armies have many different builds possible and therefore won't get boring quickly.
Demons can be very competitive when in the right hands.
I learned alot about how to play my demons by reading the posts of Warmaster and Black Blow Fly. Also ArbitorIan has a nice slaaneshi demon tactica posted here somewhere.
If you're willing to do a little searching here at dakka you should turn up a lot of good threads/posts concerning demons.
Cheers!
