The core of my Ork army is almost assembled. I have been slowly replacing my 2ed Orks with more modern versions. My roommate and I split the cost of a Black Reach box and split the minis. So that's what I am working on at the moment. Here's a few pics to get the thread started. I hope to be finished painting the BR guys by the end of today. At this point I probably have over 100 Boyz and can finally start working on gathering a few vehicles. Here's a few images of some of the Boys I have already painted. (EDIT: original 2ed ork on the left complete with obnoxious and loud goofy moon symbol this was changed into a Runtherd for my 5ed army on the right.)

I'll post some more tonight after a full day of painting.

I was basing some old orks and getting them ready to make their skin tones look better when I came across this one ork whose weapon was bent at an odd looking angle. I broke his arms off and found I had two sword arms, one right and one left. I decided to make a Boss Snikrot out of him. I made an Orky looking backpack out of green stuff and some spare bits. I'm going to let it dry over night and then customize the blades some more to make them stand out. They certainly don't look rippy enough. He's going to look good in front of my converted 1ed ork Kommandos.

Oh yeah, this guy will be finished before sunset tonight, along with the custom Runtherds I built from two 2ed Orks.

Good looking stuff so far! I especially like your Nob w/ the big choppa, as well as the one sporting the brassy powerklaw. Good looking Snikrot conversion, too! Now bust out that pin vice and drill out those gun barrels! You may also want to go over some of your metals with a Devlan Mud or Badab black wash. It'll dull them a bit to proper worn equipment levels.

Sunset?! What is this? Some sort of gothic horror flick?!

"The Orks must be painted by sunset tonight, or a thousand years of darkness will be released on the world!"

But, they'r pretty nice, i aint never seen orks that bright green before.

I can see a lot of people being really crictical of these, mostly people are not happy these days unless you dip them in badab black and glue dirt on them. I on the other love the creativeness and strong highlights, reminds me a lot of good ole 2nd edition. Keep up the good work.

Well I ran out of the green I was using and bought some new GW Thraka Green wash. It changed the look of all my latest painted orks. They are much darker now and probably more to the liking of the others here. I started painting orks in 2ed and did want a colorful more cartoony look for my army. Just like the codex portrayed them. That carried over when I started painting the newer models. That moon for example has been removed and the figure transformed into a weapon wielding Runtherd now. I like the new green though quite alot and am considering painting the brighter models to match... on the other hand I like the idea of the orks having different skin-tones just like humans in real life. It also depends on how soon my DA bits arrive and how much more I can stand painting this army. I've been at it for over two months now. The pics above are the older "before" images, I'm going to start posting the "after" images starting tomorrow. Here's a few snaps of all the models sitting in boxes while some flocking dries on all their bases. Tomorrow morning I will add a second shade of flocking and start photographing a few in better lighting. You can see the newer darker green in some of the group images below.

I also used some green stuff to alter the appearance of the knives in my Boss Snikrot mini. It's rough, I know, but it was my first attempt. Had I the forethought I would have done this on the knives before assembling, but didn't really consider it until afterward. Something to remember before tackling the DAs.

Here's a 2ed ork boy converted into a Runtherd for my 5ed army. I made the grot-prod from scavenged gundam model parts.

Here's both of the ones I created along with 5 gretchin. The other 30+ couldn't show up for the photo; maybe I'll get them to line up for a group shot later. The lot is far more colorful than just this handful.

I've toned down all my bases from the cartoonish green grass I used to use. Each model, old and new got flocked with fine grit and then painted black, brushed with brown and then flocked with two shades of greenery. I like that one of the twins has a plasma pistol, a weapon he could never have. I think he carries it just for show, to scare the grots.

First edition orks re-painted to be used as Kommandos in my army. These were donated to me by my friend who has been playing since the game first hit the US. Odd looking little buggers. It's like looking at original Star Trek Klingons vs the ones of today. The guy with the boss pole is going to be converted into my warphead after I remove that ugly mess atop the pole and replace it with something more weirdboyish. The only physical change I made to any of these guys was to give one of them a big-shoota.
