I've noticed that many of the people are backing either Space Hulk 1st Ed or Zombies!!! The thing about these games is that they are really very similar in many ways. The boad layout is similar w/narrow passages and modular card stock pieces. I've found Space Hulk (and Space Crusade) to be better because of the team mechanics and actually having an enemy antagonist. Zombies has great pieces and boards. I love the mall expansion pack. But I hate that you have to basically fight the zombies in hand to hand. I've wanted to re-write the zombies rules for quite a while so that they really are more like Space Hulk. This would mean building the city before the game, eliminating the one piece per square rule, which slows the game down immensely, as does the lack of ranged fire. I would have the bullet counters act as a re-roll for a shot. The players should act like a team, not a trying to stab each other in the back. Best board game ever though? Diplomacy, if you have 7 people with 6-10 hours to spare. It happens once in a blue moon.

If you have a decent group (3-5) that can meet regularly Descent by Fantasy Flight games can be quite fun, and unlike Heroquest, is still readily available. Models aren't to bad either.

I wish I still had fireball island, it was indeed cool. LOL nice way to make it a drinking game Yak. But I will echo remarks about ZOMBIES!!! as it is a great buy for what you get. Dont have the expansions, but you dont need em. Space hulk already got my vote earlier.

Original Illuminati. I have the original pocket game set where you had to cut out the money yourself, and the deluxe set.

Kingmaker is in some ways a seriously flawed game yet it's simple to learn, colourful (original Gibson Games edition) with all the lovely shield markers , full of historical flavour and I've played absolutely tons of it over the years.

I play Descent regularly. Great game.
So good that I interrupted painting armies (long long overdue) to paint Descent miniatures, and actually went ahead and painted them. Being a notorious tinman, who rarely bothers to get down and paint models painting up my Descent game is an indication of its relative importance in my gaming heirarchy.
Talisman and Space Hulk are also old favourites.
I do collect (and painted up) mechs for Battletech but dont consider it a boardgame per se. I use terrain rather than hexmaps.

But I will echo remarks about ZOMBIES!!! as it is a great buy for what you get. Dont have the expansions, but you dont need em. Space hulk already got my vote earlier. Drinking a shot everytime you get fireballed totally changes fireball island. Players suddenly start talismaning fireballs just because they're going to get hit instead of trying to win the game. . .it's great. Also two other drinking rules for fireball island we use (these could really be applied to any dice based board game): 1) If you roll your die off the table you lose your turn and take a drink (which is wicked because the more you drink the more likely you are to roll your die of the table). 2) Everyone gets their own die. If you accidentally roll someone else's die instead of your own you take a drink (which is funny because the drunker someone gets the easier it becomes to switch out their die when they're not looking). Oh, and of course when someone wins the game everyone else has to take a drink.

Junta was published by West End Games.
Each player is the head of a powerful family in the political class of a South American banana republic. You build up a voting base by collecting cards for support of trade unions, the Church and so on. At Election time the offices of President and cabinet ministers are decided by player voting. The offices include General of Army, Admiral of the Navy, Police and so on. Each position has some powers, for example the Navy Admiral has a gunboat on the river and can use it to shell the Presidential Palace (the traditional signal for starting a coup.)
The point of the game is to take the annual international development aid budget and divide it up between the players. You then need to get your wad to the Central Bank to deposit it because it's money in the bank that decides the winner at the end of the game. Other players often try to hire an assassin to kill you while you are at the Bank, and steal your cash.
The allocation of money is handled in secret by the President, so it's assumed he is givng himself the most every round. Therefore there will often be a coup attempt. During a coup attempt, the forces (army tanks, guboat, police, union rioters and so on) are mobilised for street fighting across the capital city. The winner is the side which controls certain strategic locations such as the central radio station, railway station and so on.
Regardless of assassinations and coups, no-one gets knocked out because if your head head of family dies he is replaced by a brother or cousin.
Altogether a great game that works better with more players.

Junta was a great game, but some of the rules were unclear, also the combat system left a lot to be desired.
You could never get more than a fraction of the students/demonstrators etc there for a proper die in droviness coup.
