Yeah, at the moment the rust is OTT, it's just a transitional colour till I bring it back toward the intended results. More to come!

Here's todays update.  The metal areas and largest sections are mainly finished.  Just need some more black into the mix to add some extra shading to the areas most needing it.  And some skulls and cabling that needs to be picked out and painted....not far from completing the legs, maybe another day on it will see it done...

Then onto the body....ooooh....big job!

Comments, suggestions, crits?  OH! What do you think of the green oxidisation?  Does it fit or should I lose it?  I'm not sure if I like it or not....

The rust and the green oxidisation look awesome lemming... Can't wait to see this done. In fact i was wondering if you could share the "recipe" for your rust effects and the awesome lava base.

Oxidisation looks nice, but you'll want silverish on any parts that are moving/rubbing against other metal as the rust will be scraped away from those spots. A little grease might not be a bad thing.

Yar, grease and bare metal come tomorrow! I'll post some info on how I did the rust and lava as well. Till then!

From the angle, it looks like the rear leg spikes protrude over the lava. That will affect the lighting areas. Something to consider.

Looks great so far, BTW.

Dudes, I'm having difficulty deciding on what colour to paint the cabling and piping. It's getting real busy detail wise now, so I don't want to take it too far, but I don't just want to do the cables etc black either. Any ideas?

Go metallic, but just a touch. Use brown (and greenish black?) washes to keep everything cohesive. The trick to picking out the details but not making it look too busy is to stick to black and browns with the occasional splash of muted complementary color (if needed). In this case, your split complementaries are going to be violet and blue-greens (with blue-violet as the direct complement), which I'd use very, very sparingly. Or you can go limited palette and stick to the red-yellow ranges, but again only in muted tones & tints.

Okelly dokelly, a big update on my progress.  I've mostly finished the legs, just have to finish off some little bits such as some source lighting on the legs and the cables and about 5 skulls on the chains and stuff.

I'm pretty happy with it's current progress but any extra advice or ideas are definitely welcome!

As complex as this baby is, I'm having a blast painting it up.  It's amazing seeing it come together like this, I'm really proud of the way that it's come along.  I'd wanna be, the amount of hours so far!!!!

Rightiomeho ho ho!  Here's an update on where I am up to.  Spent most of Monday finishing off the legs, they're pretty much done.  I ended up doing the cabling in a mix of REALLY muted red, REALLY muted purple and black highlighted and washed with black, dark browns and greys.  I think it looks alright.  Will post some better shots of it once I have it all mostly done or after it's done.

Here's the painting WIPs:

After the metals were applied

Some details on the "pilot" - still a lot of work to do and this bit is the HARDEST bloody bit of the LOT

And the last thing you see before you die!

As usual, comments, crits or suggestions are welcome.  Any ideas on exactly what bits you guys reckon I should do yellow are welcome.  I have some ideas, but they will be pretty fluid until I get what I'm happy with....might call for some recoats!

Some yellow might be good on the torso, to give it a bit of cohesion and balance. Can't wait to see it all together.

Lemming this is really amazing! Great work mate.

You should enter this into golden demon! With regard to the yellow I think the balance is just right. You don't want too much yellow on it over wise it will ruin this brilliant work.

The base is spot on and really improvec over the first few runs you did as well. And I love the rust and weathering effects on the metals.

great stuff man

I know I post lots of photos..... : D  So I've decided to just update this post with new photos....

I'm still a little stuck here guys, I'm thinking I need a little more yellow now that it's together, but at the same time it's almost in balance....I dont' wanna damage the force....

Waddya reckon?  I'm a little, but not so much as before, stumped.....

Hey Lemmng! Allow me to say otherwise dude... you have the exact amount of yellow there. More of it would distract the viewer from the fact that the model portrays a HUGE MONSTER MADE OF METAL WHO'S COMING FOR YOUR GUTS. Believe me when I say it's perfect right now.

If you do insist on adding some yellow, maybeit would look good on the sides of the "torso" (defiler cockpit).

Congratulation on an excelente model and on a painting job that did justice to the conversion.

Cheers.

Any more yellow would be too much. You can pretty much rest on your laurels now (unless they are as spikey as your defiler).

kudos!

You know I think I've got it. The slight visor above the head of the penitent, I should paint that and the surrounding panel yellow, that ought to make the body stand out some more and won't detract from the overall effect. What do you guys reckon? I don't think this needs much more in the way of yellow, there's just a feeling of lack....and I think that might be it....the rest is going to be filled out with the extra details, but something needs to help increase the attention placed on the pilot I think.

Maybe I'm wrong? I've got a couple of days for you guys to talk me out of it!

Or maybe I need to do it some other way?  Hmmmm.....I know it's so close to being nicely balanced!  I'm just so hesitant coz one step over and it ruins the overall effect! ARGH!

I don't know if VDR would be too necessary, considering that a space marine stands to just below his knee. It only looks big and impressive, but it's not really THAT much bigger than a defiler.

Thanks for the comments guys! Your encouragement has been spurring me on to greater heights!
