You do realize that you can play GW games using non-GW minis, don't you?

Posted By Abadabadoobaddon on 03/17/2007 2:30 PM You do realize that you can play GW games using non-GW minis, don't you? I mostly play in GW Bunkers, and the LGS requires GW mini's. So why bother getting figs for games I will never play or use, unless its something ultra cool.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

Posted By General Hobbs on 03/16/2007 10:58 PM What I find to be ironically funny is that most of the alternative companies with different games are only marginally cheaper, if cheaper at all, then GW. I've posted prices comparisons before and I really don't see that large of a difference in many items. Do many other company's have single man-sized figures for $17? I'm thinking about characters like Ulric, Shrike, Tigurius, etc. Lysander (who is a terminator, and slightly bigger) is $20. Gaunt and Schaeffer are $15. For less than $17, I can buy a whole infantry platoon with all the options for Flames of War, a warjack for Warmachine, and in the $20 range, a starter team for Urban War. I could go on. Now I'll admit, some items come a bit closer, but no one else goes to the extremes that GW does (i.e. $17 for a single man-sized model).

I'm lookin at Warmachine figures right now....6 figures for 24.99, so 12 for 49 comes out to around 4 bucks a figure...so a little more then say, 10 marines for 35. So troops which you need more of cost more. I did point out elsewhere that you can make your own characters with leftover bitz. ( pre discount costs btw.....lots of dealers give one). Over at Confrontation I'm seeing single models in the 30's, such as the red Lioness, and the mounted bard. You can get 3 knights for 40 some dollars......

Yes, that's true. But in Warmachine, those figures are metal, not plastic, and you also don't need as many figures in general to play a full-sized game. How many marine boxes is an average marine player going to buy? I would guess three is probably average. That's $105, just for your troops choices. I could easily have a whole Warmachine army for that much. I also said that some items come closer to GW prices, and I never once claimed that Rackham was cheaper than GW. This is subjective, but I think a lot of Rackham's sculpts are as good or (often) better than GW's anyway. Now, that said, GW does have some very beautiful minis as well, but they also have a significant number of crappers. You're right about making characters from bitz - yes you can do that. But that's not really the point, as far as pricing goes. I can legally make extra platoons in Flames of War by mounting fewer figures to a base, but that doesn't have anything to do with the price of the figures.
