GrimTeef that's not the only way at all. It would be much better simply if everyone played a basic human and the various races of the 40K universe would only be encountered via NPCs and mobs. Just give the humans enough customisation in character creation and it'll be allright.

Would it really feel like 40K to you to take the World of Warcraft approach, meaning you'd end up with a couple Ork Madboyz named Roflmao and Pwnzy00 chatting with their faction allies Cheezemeister the Iron Warrior Space Marine and BadAzz the Dark Eldar Wych, planning the eventual destruction of GrimTeef the Eldar Farseer and his PvP guild filled with Necromunda gangers?

Well, as Ed Maule once famously said: "Therion's from Finland, where comp does not exist. Where he's from the trash we're forced to field for a tournament would lose to a 12 year old." - bigchris1313

Stonefox, did you ever try Planetside?

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Am i the only one that thinks they might just not have marines as a playable race/class? it would make more sense and balance for the game and they could put more balanced races in like stock humans/eldar( dodgy but meh)/tau/kroot/maybe orks? i dunno it maybe that they make it so your only playing as humans and everything i sbassed off your class etc..

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

Making it so that you couldn't play as a space marine would be about the dumbest thing they could do.

I saw a few posts about this game on some gaming forums and every one of them had people saying "I can't wait to play as a space marine". These are people who do NOT play the table top game.

Looking at it from the outside it just boils down to the fact that Space Marines are cool as all hell, people like them. It's only when you get into playing the game that the loathing of "MEQ's" comes into play.

hrm, my dream for a 40k mmog would have been a mmog that does not have the time=skills formula as the base gameplay. something of a necromunda-styled game would have been nice, where you have a bigger focus on building up a society/base than pumping up your chars with the best lewt and gear. kinda guild-oriented instead of player oriented, more teamwork and hate towards other guilds that might attack you for territory, slaves, resources and so forth.

anything that tries to make marines, guardsmen, 'nids, 'crons, orks, eldar and tau walk around and cooperating is doomed to be a mediocre wow-clone. go for something akin to what they are trying to do in age of conan imo. in fact i was hoping that they would try to get funcom to make a 40k-mmog, but since they are busy with conan, thats not likely to happen.

Maybe all the characters will start as basic human/eldar/tau/mushrooms, and things like Aspect Warriors, Crisis Suits and Space Marines will be something like Prestige Classes. So, instead of the infamous Jedi Grind, you'll have some long, drawn out quest to become one of the super warriors of your race. Would work I think,

"The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy. Elaborate euphemisms may conceal your intent to kill, but behind any use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: 'I feed on your energy.'" - Frank Herbert

hmm, personally it would have been nice that once you have made a character or gotten up to a certain skill, you would get the more advanced classes unlocked. but personally i don't have illusions that we will be seeing all the races of 40k as player races. personally i would like a dan abnett styled game experience better than a generic "space-marine invades this and that and kills generic bad guys". plays more to the background of warhammer 40k than the game, which imo would be nice.

naturally since these guys are pretty fresh at making games i have nothing against them playing it safe and making a generic wargame simulator where you can become a marine or daemon or whatever and fight on generic instances like the battlegrounds in wow. it wouldnt be a game that i really would enjoy, but it would be a addition to 40k's transition to the digital mediums.

I am excited to see what they do with this game...but I do have questions, of course. I am sure everyone has the same ones and some have even voiced them so I will spare the reapeat.

I am interested to see how they handle the stuff like Dreadnaughts and other HS/Elite selections. I personally think they should be temporary units awarded to you, that you can call upon, when you have completed a series of events. At low lvls you would get lower powered stuff, like Scouts or equilivant, but as you progress in power so would these awards. So eventually you would be calling in a Dreadnaught, Hammerhead or Killa Canz when you are at higher lvls.

For weapons, I think power of the weapon should be based on a combo of the skill of the player and lvl progression. So the more you use "said" weapon the better you get with it and the easy it is to wield. Hopefully something like that would make you at least feel like you have some kind of customization with your character.

Then again I think I am pipe-dreaming and have to remember not to get my hopes up too much for an awesome game and settle for a mediocre point-click-shoot type game.

I'm back!

I liked how NOLF2 handled this (if you're familiar with that game).
