The issue he was making was not that people cannot complain, but that the complaint was un-necessarily harsh and nasty,it wasn't really criticism and wasn't warrented. I am willing to bet that it would never be said face to face either. And guess what ... he was right. So the rest of you {triggerbaby et al} stop behave like asses and grow up. Each of your assinine replies have just proved his point - sometimes as a community you/ we just suck.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

What do you mean sometimes?
If you read internet message boards long enought you'll realize that the internet sucks becaue anonymity makes us all jerks.
That said, there are ways to make a point and ways to make a point. How you do it will colour the responses you get.
See above for a typical example of what happens when you're not so careful about how you phrase things. Esentialy he called out the whole board ans in true intarweb style we cam out to play.
I get the point, even agree to a certain extent but he could simply have said, "Too harsh my friend, there was alot of work put into those and I, for one, am impressed."
See.
Same point, not so... flame bait.

I have nothing useful to add.

I believe everybody *should* play nice. But when people decide to call out boors by being louts, a little edge isn't a bad thing. :-)

Wow, this thread degenerated really fast.  For those of you who want to see the rest of the entries:

I like the Altanasar Wraithlord myself.  If I could paint like the worst of these I'd be happy as a clam, but if I could paint like those frenchies, I'd leave my fiancee for my own hand (that sounds bad...)

Wow, Triggerbaby certainly knows his Internets. And the cheetoh-eating, mountain dew-drinking legions of WOW/animu/scifi-tards. The Internet Makes You Stupid.

I don't see what the big deal is about. Surely everyone has, at one point, talked about how crappy the Mets orthe UK world cup team are, even if the people talking crap can't even make the minor leagues. If I cared more I'd complain just like the other guys. Atlanta did use to have nicely-blended models with sweet freehand (obviously doesn't stand up to France, no surprise). Look back at 2005 and 2004. Then again, look at 2006 and I suppose you shouldn't be surprised - check the 40k single minis against the slayer sword winner.

"...Liefield can't draw..."

Well I agree with that...

But back on topic,  I'll be the first to admit Atlanta is the weakest of the US Golden Demons (as evident by the 2 Golds, 1 silver, and 6 bronze demons I've won in Atlanta over the years, and I'm levels below the frenchies).  And yes, the field of entries is small.  But they have to pick someone to win (well I guess they don't if they had standards, but it is GW we're talking about...).  You can't blame the winners for not meeting your expectations.  If the "really really good" painters don't show up, then it falls to the "good" painters to take home the awards.  If there isn't any French GD level pieces at the show, well, that's the way it goes.  If the painting community really cared, maybe more of them would show up.  The USGD aren't what they used to be, and certainly aren't the same as the European GD.  That's life.

To say the winners are crap is pointless.  They were the best at the show on that given day.  And they we all well desserved.  If more top painters started showing up, the rest would have to step up their game to compete and it would bootstrap itself into increasing the quality of painting (just as it has done in France and Germany).  Unfortunately, it seems the great US painters of days gone by have better things to do.  Where's Jen Haley, Bobby Wong, Lillianna Troy, Victor Hardy, Bryan Shaw, or the number of excellent painters these days?

Well enough of that, just my two cents,

-Jeff Freeman

Dammit, quit trying to inject sweet reason into the feeding frenzy! You're just harshing my buzz!

Here's another thing to consider: photography. I doubt the judges were looking at photos- they were using the mark one eyeball, in room light, at actual size. I know for a fact that my best painting tends to disappoint when seen in all its computer-enlarged glory. There is nothing like a good close-up of a miniature to bring out the flaws, and nothing like lighting to make or break a paintjob.

3. All this being said, I (and the painting community as a whole -see cool mini or not) thought Atlanta had a good showing. There were excellent models from Todd, Michael Lugo, Fresderick Casler and more. Yes there weren't a ton of high caliber entries, but most of the winners were very good. Todd Swanson is an excellent painter and I suspect he would do quite well if he chose do enter European competitions.

.

As a permenant and long time resident of cmon, I must say that the response there hasn't been as great as you seem to be implying. What is your cmon alias?

better question.. who cares..  their stuff doesn't cut it anymore.. and in some cases, never cut it in the first place.. (with the exceptions of lilianna and bryan anyways.. the others .. i am glad they aren't entering.. )

but to answer the question. I think they painted themselves out of the competitions.. people got tired ( i know i did) of seeing the same stuff just a different color each year.. and some of the stuff just kept getting busier and busier where it wasn't about painting but how much crap could one slap on a model and it would still hold paint etc..  as much as i like pristine painted models.. I would much rather see mediocre works by real hobbiests, not specialist painters that don't even play..

that's my take on it.. take it or don't, i really could give a flip.

It's not that the Atlanta GD is full of crap models, the work is obviously excellent and superior to 95% of the hobbyists in this game, it's just that it isn't 'Golden Demon' worthy, IMO.  It irks me to think now that some painters lucky enough to live near Atlanta can put 'Pro-painted by a Golden Demon winner' on their eBay auctions with legitimacy or compare themselves to the European painters by claiming they have the same, therefore equal, achievement.  This is the third year in a row now a majority of painters in my area believe that if they made the trip to Atlanta they could come home with a statue from a model that probably wouldn't make the final cut at Chicago or Baltimore.  Hopefully the actual winners from Atlanta can realize this and be a little more humble than JudgeSpedd there.

- Oaka

Edit:  After taking a closer look at the models, I believe that this is the first GD I have seen where the Staff 40K single miniature winner is painted better than the public one, a comparison of the two faces couldn't make that more clear.  Gratz to GW employees for helping to set the bar.

It's just the way things work, Oaka. You could use GTs as a comparison too - in a no-comp Adepticon tourney, someone who's used to "friendlier" USGTs might not fare so well. I've heard similar stories comparing RTTs to GW's 'ard Boyz RTT. Different venues have different difficulty levels, that's all. This just means you should head to Atlanta if you really want that Demon.

I like the picture of Todd Swanson with his armful of Golden Daemons.

Now, my personal opinion is that Jeff Hodges' Blue Terminators should have won the Slayer Sword- just for the face on the sergeant. I think the Gold & Silver winners of the 40K large model- the Wraithlord, and the Night Lords Daemon Prince- are technically more challenging, and visually more appealing, than Trogdor.

What did bug me were the nasty words directed at the work of excellent painters, which nobody on this forum could match in their wildest dreams.

In conclusion, you all suck so shut up. Don't make me scan for photos to prove it.

Actually, Dakka has had many a fine, fine painter. Award winning painters, even. Migsula is one example, but there have been others.

Regardless of the number of good painters/modelers on this site, we definitely have our fill of rabid monkeys. Take that as you will.

You're so sweet to remember!
