Where oh where are my precious cyborks? The unit that I take in every game (unless running KOS), the unit that I spent many many hours modeling and painting, the unit that I crush silly beakies with?
Oh well, I can live with their loss. I suppose I can run them as MA nobs.
Other then the fact that I'm going to have to spend many many hours on remodeling stuff to make the army playable, I am very excited about the new dex.

I suspect "Looted Baneblade" is just going to be a unit option in Apocalypse just like "Stompa" and "Naughty Baneblade."
Honestly, just looking at the rumors, and not having a Chaos Codex, I would say the most obvious difference is in options. Orks can get 3 different HQs, all of which really change how the army works down to offering a bonus troop type. It looks like you can outfit for a few different types of attack, whether foot horde, mech horde, Deff Wing (or similar), lots of bikes, etc. Also, it seems that it plays significantly different from other armies to have a unique feel that really matches the fluff of the army. Jump squads that can fleet in general, but have to take essentially a dangerous terrain check when jumping, special characters for pretty much every unit type (which also add benefits or troop choices), vehicles that can do damage by running over units.
Overall, I think it is a good example of just how much special rules/gear really help the feel of an army. What's more orky than running your giant ramshackle tank over things? Perhaps sprinting that final distance in a huge mob to charge, screaming WAAAAAAAGGHHH!!!! all the way.
Now, I don't know how I feel about the Grots thing. Also, I didn't notice mention of a Squiggoth (sorry if I missed it), and that makes me sad. Still, every unit seems to have a good use, or at least some use, and all are suitably orky, to the point that if you used Chaos models in a "counts as" army, I suspect people who didn't know better would think to themselves "Wow, that army plays a lot like an ork horde." Which is of course the entire point of having different army lists and rules for each army, to make it so if you played with just proxied bases, each army would feel and perform differently enough to be recognizable.

I'm thinking that GW's started to get into viral marketing. Think about it: for years we've been able to reliably trust certain sources of rumors from Warseer and if they turn that around they could get you hyped for a new release even though it'll be pure crap. Everyone was crying about the poor Orks when the Chaos codex and their lack of options came out, but suddenly GW reverses the codex creep towards blandness and everyone's happy again. GW really ought to jump into the viral bandwagon since they have a a full website and a half (Warseer and Dakka at least) that wholly trust rumors. Or at least jump into the (understandable) whine mode for Dakkites.

You know, I hope this is even close to what they've done with the codex: orcs.
Orcs were my first army back in 1988-1989 when Rogue Trader first came out. I think I even have some 1980's GW plastic orcs sitting around somewhere. I haven't played them in over 15 years.
This sounds sufficiently orcy and competitive that I think I'll give them a try. Time to start saving for at least one army box.

Even though that all looks amazing, evryone is now just going to take ridiculously powerful forces as (as far as i know) they can have all the pros of freeks with no real drawbacks! That just gonna ruin the fluff and feel of the army as now you will have all the toureny players fielding orks and not just the people who love them for their background. Hummph.

Not only that, but different weapon options than just twin linked bigshootas? Awesome. Even if it gets spendy, its a nice thing to see. I am going to be on the receiving end of some nasty ork hurt real soon, but it will be a joyful sort of pain, because it will be fun. The ork player will feel as if he has a chance, instead of feeling like he is played a one sided battle. My fun factor just went up several notches. I hope to see more ork armies finally.

I don't see the fuss over bikes really. T5 with a 4+ cover/armor save and 25 points just doesn't inspire me all that much. At least not compared to the now stupidly good Storm Boyz. And I LOL'd at the post about how bad it is that Orks will be a power gamers army now. I've been waiting for Orks to be a good army since I started playing 40k with them about 3 years ago. Bout time I started getting some use out of my favorite faction.

Posted By fellblade on 09/05/2007 7:00 AM The response to the Ork Codex is overwhelmingly positive so far. One ponders: what did GW do differently in the Orks Codex than in the Chaos Space Marine Codex? And why? After the codex that they've had, Orks have hardly anywhere to go but up...combine that with the fact that Gav or Jervis didnt write the book and there you have it...

If the bikes are still providing cover to other units (at 4+), they will be very useful. However, at only 25 points each, i doubt it.

I'm betting that they won't confer that cover save like they did before. And even if they did, at 25 points a pop, it's not THAT hard to hit them with enough shots that they go down, 4+ cover save and all...

If the Vulcha leader has Nob stats, I think they're I3, therefore I4 on the charge...but not sure.
Also, keep in mind Warbiker squads will be small in size and have a lot of Trukks, Battlewagons, and terrain to hide behind. The 4+ save could be just enough to keep them safe from the shots that DO get to them. On another note, why don't they just have warbike smog add +2 to existing cover saves? Thus, warbikes in the open get a respectable 5+, if you bother to cover them, they go down to a very nice 3+....

Posted By KhaosBob on 09/08/2007 6:31 AM Did I miss something? Orks are base I2 right? If they get Furious Charge, won't they just be I3 on the charge? A basic Ork is I2, a Nob is I3, and a warboss is I4. Since Nob's and Warbosses are almost always given power claws, their initiative is somewhat irrelivant, but the basic boys have gone down from I4 to I3 on the charge and have lost choppas, both of which are huge hits against their effectiveness. Luckily, they have also gone down in points to balance this out.
