PM I havent figured a 1500 pt list, but it seems to me that 9 of said vypers and 6 or so warwalkers would do a serious job on orks before they get across the board. Of course the resiliancy of falcons isnt there, but you'll bump your firepower tenfold by giving them up.
Not worth it. In any top tier army each unit is potentially underpriced and overpowered. Falcons do more than their points cost suggests, as do Harlequins and Fire Dragons. Vypers and War Walkers unfortunately do not. I will never use a unit that can't hold its own in a point by point comparison with the most powerful units in the game. Vypers for example are the worst scum of the skimmer class in all of
40K so I see no place for them in my army.
I was thinking alot yesterday about vypers and I sort of came to the same conclusion...they're pretty much quadrant grabbers and thats all they're reallly good for. The only way to make them somwhat surviveable is to double their cost.....I got waxed by 9 tornado's this weekend at the 'Ard boys tournement so naturally I was trying to look for the equivalent in the eldar codex. I admitted to myself last night that it isnt in there.
Not sure I agree with you on the Warwalker point though. I've been using two units in my army religiously with a 4xScatter 2xStarcannon config with Eldrad babysitting pretty much since the new codex came out. Smart and careful maneuvering with these units makes them absolutly devestating to any army in the game. You can safely make more mistakes with falcons and be more wreckless with them, I doubt however that anything you could do with a falcon, including dropping off harlies, can match the destructive firepower from turn 1 that these gems have. Its a totally different way of fighting the battle, using the walkers, but I dont think I would ever trade them in. In a mechanised list they have no place, and you'd want falcons. I've been footslogging though, and find all the things you can do with falcons lackluster for a heavy support choice (that is:stay alive and drop troops since thats all they do, along with tank shocking)
I'm definatly not attacking falcons, I just personally dislike playing with them...I find them boring, unchallenging and obvious...but good at what they do. Warwalkers can punish you if you mess up with them, but they win my games all the time against light armour/vehicles, marines, big bug armies, anything....and I'm sure they'll be great against orks as well.
