The different color might be enough - nice neon green "PrivateMessages (1)", or pulsing neon green text even. The old pop up was too much, made scrolling weird and was too prevalent. Though I definitely knew I had a PM

Pretty much agree with all of that. Also, I'd like more pics on the home page, 5 is just not enough. And while I'm at it, why do we have "modelling and painting" instead of "painting and modelling"? The second way sounds better. I'm pretty sure that's how it used to be. And I know that "modelling" can be spelled with one L or two, but I always used two, and must assume that it is more proper!

For clicking on a thread in the forum subheadings when viewing the main page, if I click the thread I get taken to the first post. I have to click the little arrow to get to the last post in the thread. I'm just used to being able to click the thread itself from the main page and going directly to the latest post.

There are a few changes coming to the homepage in the next release and more pics is one of them. Modeling & Painting is a hangover from dakka tradition, and I guess you would model something before you paint it. As a UKian The single L in Modeling bugs me too, and if I get bugged enough I might add a country-specific tweak there so that us Brits get the Queen's L too (but there are a million and one things to do before that). Americans outnumber Brits by more than 10 to 1 on dakka so I think people would notice if I made the switch for everyone.

Yeah this is something that I am undecided on. I think more forums tend to do it the way you describe but the default for this forum software is to give you the option to go to the thread or the post. I am inclined to leave it as is as a dakkaism since it adds a little bit of functionality, but if enough people complain about it then I'll make the switch.

I love the concept with the medling pictures on the frontpage for instant view, but I rthink it would be more interesting if they would change reguarly. or maybe, let people give the threads a rating, and the best rating get's on frontpage.

Will there be a thread tracking/alert box system?

For instance, I mark certain threads and when I log into Dakka I see a screen shows which threads were updated?

There is already a very crude one 'My Subscriptions' which is being updated in the next release to be more effective and actually show if threads have been updated (as well as better sorting). If you need to monitor a thread closely then you can click the 'Email me when this thread changes' link at the bottom of any thread which will email you as soon as someone else posts.

Just FYI, no rush on this but, the underline tags don't seem to work.

I'd like to disable the glossary in my preferences.

I'd like to be able to set my timezone. I must be overlooking it, but I've searched for it 2 or 3 times in my Profile.

I'd like to be able to sort the "Recent Threads" and "View Posts since my Last Visit" results page.

Change/Update the thread icons or let me disable them. The bullets means nothing to me and there isn't a key for them on all pages.

Has anyone mentioned stats? I'd like monthly stats. Yeah, I'm "that type" of strange.

Stats are waaaay down the priority list so you probably wont see any significant stats for at very least a year. A few more stats might be added with each major release until then though.

Recent Threads sorting will be coming soonish.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I don't know if this is the right thread for it, but a cool addition would be to chronicle the "indy" tournament scene, maybe even with pictures. Something consistent and organized. Winners, rankings, strippers, dakkites involved, etc.

I just thought that would be cool. I don't know what would be involved in getting the approval of the organizers. Nor do I have any clue as to the interest of the various combatants. But it would be a cool way to get Dakka involved in competitive play w/o having to cough up any kind of prizes, and could lead to dakka sponsored tournaments down the road.

Could I get a "thumbs up" ork-icon? I remember seeing one on The Waaagh, and have repeatedly found uses for it here on Dakka, particularly on the Modeling forums

TAco: you'd have to hire writers or volunteers. Centurion99,
for example, covers the AWC stuff as a volunteer/enthusiast
I think.

hiring? encouraging! much more cost effective and everyone gets that warm fuzzy feeling.

I'm not involved in the tournament scene I don't know what would be involved.

But all you need really is:

1) Listing of Tournaments, which we already have.
2) Lists of winner etc, which are probably already at least in a xls file somewhere.
3) People to offer pictures, or a dakkite to say in advance they will be sure to take a couple shots of championship games and painting winners.
4) Send everything to Legoburner!

and BOOM, dakka is even cooler by the day.

I don't mind sending e-mails out to organizers but I'm stuck penniless in the wastes of northern Canada I myself won't be going to any tourneys this year.

Well all except step 4 should be well within our reach sometime in April. Nice suggestions!

Here's an idea, how about a "Thread Ostracism" device? If someone is being disruptive in a thread the other posters can revoke that user's posting privileges.

Basically it would be a button along the bottom of the user's posts like the PM button that other posters can click on. Unlike traditional Athenian ostracisms more than one poster at a time can be ostracized from a thread. However, all of the other posters in the thread (or, suppose, who posted in the last couple of days or whatever time period) must agree on the ostracized posters.

So suppose there's a thread where three posters are having a discussion. A fourth poster join and hijacks the thread. If all three previous posters click that fourth poster's Ostracism button then the latter cannot post in that thread anymore.

Anyone could vote to ostracize a fellow poster from a thread, but abuse would be prevented (and indeed the proposal is intended to prevent abuses like hijacking threads, or just plain posting poorly) by requiring the everyone else (currently, for the given value of 'currently' described above - I suggest a week) in the thread to agree on which fellow poster should not be posting in that thread.

'Thread Ostracism' would not really be worth the effort it would take to implement. I have used a few communities set up in the way you describe, and although it works to a point, about 10% of the time it is used improperly by the users to push out dissenting opinions and create a sort of groupthink that users get forced to adhere to. Moderators and admins do a better job of allowing more variable discussion to occur but have the downside of reacting relatively slowly to bad posts. Use the 'alert moderator' button by a post and a mod will check it out fairly quickly though.

Double posts are quite uncommon as we have time limits before you can post again, which prevent double-click related double posts. Sometimes it does happen (as you saw), in which case click the 'alert a moderator' button (the 'warning' triangle in the top right of every post) and put in a message that it is a duplicate thread that you want deleted. A mod will then be able to find and remove it very quickly.
