From what I remember, all he did was paint them. his sculpting has always been suspect, even when he worked for GW. his paiting was cutting edge 20 years ago, unless he has updated his style, even his painting would be suspect these days. (however, I will be honest I have not seen or am not aware that I have seen any of his recent stuff)
No matter how much painting has changed nowadays, I still think that some work is just timeless. You get that feeling when you look at one of Jes Goodwyn's older miniatures; same with Mike McVey. I was looking at his site and I remembered how things were in
40k 2nd Edition: there's something about the colours, etc, that make them look like exceptionally painted toys. The difference nowadays is that these toys are taken more seriously (a Rhino with battle damage? Unthinkable!) and thus the painting looks more realistic but for the most part not necessarily better.
Hell, he was a master amongst people like the guy (whose name I just can't recall but it's on the back of my mind) who painted Commander Dante of the Blood Angels (one of the first
NMM). And look at McVey's painting of the Green Knight, if you can find it... brilliant.
He had a nice Dire Avenger Exarch based on the cover of the 2nd Ed Eldar Codex
His sculpting does suck big time. The first miniature I saw of his was Kal Jerico, 28mm, and a complete disappointment. Later I was probably the only person in the world who didn't hate Lemartes (just his purity seals). Mike, if you're reading this, you're my hero, but you should spend more time thinking out a miniature rather than just bashing some greenstuff together, tossing it inside the blender and shoving in a sculpting tool for good measure.
