I've used the GW stuff forever, and been quite happy with it.

My 2 pfennigs worth anyway.

I've recently started using gesso, and it works great. I highly recommend it, because you brush it on so you can do it in any weather. Plus it gives a very smooth, even finish.

Check out the Dakka article here.

Looked to see if anyone mentioned this: About 6 months ago when the 'new' GW Chaos Black Primer came out, it took forever to dry and I didn't like how it sprayed on.

Don't know if they changed the formula or improved it somehow, but my last two cans have been really great and been able to put on very nice coats.

Krylon seems to have changed the primers. Last can I tried (with the new rounded top) had a much higher output pressure and dried too quickly leaving a bad grainy surface.

I'm back to Walmart ColorPlace primers for the time being.

I second this. I won't use anything else on my miniatures now. I get it at the AutoZone.

Besides the fact that I really like how it covers and it has really low tooth (it's not grainy) the can also has a really great trigger that makes it easier to use. I have to remember to pick some up before Saturday, as a matter of fact. I need to prime more stuff before winter comes so I'll have stuff to paint when it's 3 degrees F outside.

I, also agree with the Dupli-color Black as primer.

I'm looking for a good white primer. Armory is not cutting it.

If you're in the UK, Halford's spray primer is the way to go. Their black and grey primers are absolutely lovely. Their clearcoat isn't too bad either.

I just bought a can each of the Dupli-Color black and white sandable primers last night. I'll let you know how the white works.

Armory primer is, frankly, embarrassing.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

I just cant see spending what GW wants for there sprays. I too use the cheap walmart or krylon if im feeling rich. those work pretty damn good. and considering i can get 3 cans of that per 1 GW can. it makes me happy

I've recently switched to Rustoleum Automotive Primer, and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. I also switched to a light grey from black, and that's working for me also with some of the more "advanced" techniques I'm trying. But the Rustoleum is fantastic - great coverage, no loss of detail, sticks to pewter like no man's business, and even dries quickly to boot. I've tried Krylon, Citadel and Armory in the past, as a point of reference.

Usually white Krylon for me and a very soft toothbrush if there is over-spray.

Armory always has too much over-spray. This is how I discovered the toothbrush fix.

Citadel at $15 a can? It's just not 100% better.

I like Black Gesso, but I don't do big batches of figs. This may have to change for my AOBR orks, but gesso's been great so far...

too bad, from what I understand, you can't put gesso through an airbrush. I have a hard enough time motivaing myseself to brush my paint jobs on, brushing primer too? Yeesh.
