well for me I paint the eyes white and the black pupil. I also use at least 2 colors on top of primer on the face. But somtimes 3 depending on how detailed I want to get.

@Bastirous I understand your frustration. Just look at the armies I play. All horde armies. ARGH>(

On 28mm stuff, I always try to do eyes. I haven't done anything in 28mm for awhile, but now I would definitely shade and do eyes. I also find it easier to do the eyes earlier, so I can cover up the mistakes (it's definitely easier to paint around the eyes).

Something I find works okay to do eyes is to break a toothpick in half, so you get a really thin splinter that won't bend as much as a brush bristle. Then dab a tiny bit of paint on that and paint the eye.

On 15mm stuff (like Flames of War) I always try to shade the eyes with a brown ink or magic wash (or most recently, dip!) or I just plaint them black. I'd probably never paint the actual white part at 15mm though. I've seen people do it, and even when done neatly it looks absolutely ridiculous because it's so out of scale.

One trick I've found for doing pupils and saving a nice 000 brush tip is to get a micron .005mm pen and cut the ink nub in half. first perfect into any eye socket on minis.

I learned in art school about human proportions in general. The funny thing about eyes is that in a typical, non-hysterical or bugeyed person very little of the iris or whites actually show. The upper and lower eyelids and lashes are predominant. Look someone in the face or check a mirror.

Like some of the previous posts I work from the inside out. The whites of the eye are never pure white so I tint my white down a very little with grey. I white in the sockets, add a dot of black or color for the iris, then use thinned dark flesh to cut in around the eye shape till it looks right. Then I layer on lighter flesh colors to represent the lids, brows, cheekbones and such, being careful to leave a little dark flesh to shade the socket. I get the most control for the least effort this way, and I know when the eyes look correct.

If I have a paler skinned model with dark hair, I always try to add eyebrows as well. This can really add character, especially to female and/or sinister models.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
