Exactly. Which is why when you put those knights on flying horses it ceases to be quasi-historical and just becomes quasi-slowed.

You mean they don't fit in despite being gay. All because of Deathwing Assault - instead of taking turns they just all want to deep strike all at once! Ouch!

Yeah that's pretty much why I quit my idea of doing that and went with the slowed idea of dead knights with dead peasants with semi-dead vicious creatures instead. And to top it all off there's some ww1 british dudes fighting alongside some ww2 british dudes out in space. Crazy!
I say if my armies are to be slowed, they should be really slowed or not at all.

with all the dress jokes aside i will try and anser the original question-
as a dark angels player i got into the chapter because it had the variant armies in the same codex. i could play the only all terminator army list, the all biker "better than the scars" in different ways army list or the "we never run" tactical marine list. (more on that in a sec). al while still staying with the same chapter.
as for darkangelness a note must be made about game design. the 3rd edition codex was probably the pinacle moment in what made DAs different from normal marines. with JJ and his teams re-write the over simplification of the army lists makes DAs little different than vanilla marines aside from the specialised 1st and 2nd company.
when i started playing my dark angels back in 3rd edition i was steered towards them by vetran gamers because they did have very specific mechanics that appealed to me. special rules that made them unique. there was of course deathwing and raven wing but it was more than that. we had a special rule for hunt the fallen. we were so stubborn and entrenched our forces never fell back. our ravenwing had special abilities that made them as good as, but different from the white scars as a comparable biker army. we had specific wargear and standards that only did things unique to our chapter. we were the one shooting specialised loyalist army in a sea of raving mad CC lunatics, and yes we do wear monkish robes over our power armor.
each of these small special rules differences set us apart from the blue. sadly now what is dark angels is, thanks to JJ, pretty much limited to -take special character A and make deathwing, or take special character B and make ravenwing. toss in some incredibly useless librarian powers, an alternate munition for our whirlwinds and lots of venerable dreads (intended to be used in conunction with special character A), oh and even more monkish robes.

We can't just change chapter or army because GW mess around and change rules, fluff etc at a whim or to suit themselves (my point again about increasing sales).
Maybe Dark Angelsness also has to do with the stubborness involved in not ditching our chapter when it has been done down by a new ropey codex

Sorry, but according to GW Dark Angels (and by extension the players) are no longer "stubborn".

Why can't we? I know I do change fluff and various other aspects of how the chapter is laid out for my Dark Angels. It makes no difference to anyone I play and all the difference to me. For example I have it that in light of the 13th black crusade they have moved the reserve companies to full battle company readiness. And thus the 3rd to 7th companies are outfitted as regular battle companies. The Dark Angel players I have met tend to be rather passionate about the chapter regardless of the rules changes.

Firstly may I say I am ASHAMED of all of you! The DA are not friggen gay! They are bi-curious..... But seriously, I have been playing the little green men for over 10 years now, not as long as some people, but long enough. I dunno how to really describe what dark angelness is... I guess its really the mind of the player that makes it darkangelly... I was drawn to this army for the same reasons other have mentioned: The glaring in the face of insurmountable odds, refusing to tuck tail and run, angry monks. I think it's honestly a persons play style. I prefer the style described in DA fluff... the whole stand and shoot them and spit in their face when they get close enough. Yes I have to agree that DA have had their fluff put through a wood chipper, but I still love 'em.

Unlike the Ultramarines or Space Wolfs who give up on a moments notice.

Dark Angels are still stubborn. All of their Headquarters units are Fearless, their Terminators are Fearless, and they have Standards that make units with 12" Fearless.
