Cypher: Yes it needs alot of work. There are lots of shields in 40k. I hate how the models look without them, but I'll try and glamour up a model for ya'll to look at. The shields aren't much, but are they a 6+ save? Seems so to me.

The Orks bit will be the haphazard look, right now it's really 'clean' but won't be when I'm finished. The warbuggies for example, have got alot of iconography and plasticard work heading their way.

I have a Eldar army, and love the way it looks--and I hate the way the Orks look, that's why I'm doing Lizzies.

Savnock:

I agree, but I don't want the weapons to be too uniform.

I've tried, but the weapons just end up looking like...hand weapons turned around. lol

I was thinking some gems or beads might help, make it a power source. I've got some ideas, but little time to do it at the moment.

For all of the weapons, I was thinking of having wires running around the model from the shield to the weapon. I might do a backpack from some IG sprues I've got, and connect the two. More likely a belt item, or maybe even a cybernetic part. Like a Voltron gem, if that makes any sense--especially on the vehicles.

For the lootas, I was thinking of copying their overall design to all of the shoota boyz (ammo back and left, weapon right) but honestly I was going to get a couple sets of lootas from a bitz service and see how they fit on the lizards...thoughts on all this?

The power source for the weapons could work out, but the backpack is giving me issues right now. I'm trying to work it into the model and it's just not flowing. Unless you can model straps etc. (depending on your comfort with GS/plasticard etc.)

The powercables themselves look like they'll work out great, if you can just figure out what they'll connect to.

I did a quick sketch mock up using a lot of orky icons. The bits that looks like it would make the biggest difference throughout the army are the ork shoulderpads and iron jaw (what's that thing called again x.x?).

For the shield I've smoothed it out in my sketch, and added some 'teeth'.

I know it's sort of abstract right now, but when I get the chance to scan this sketch tomorrow, you'll get a better idea. Just trying to help with the brainstorm right now.

Hey mate, I just had a thought for the "Armour Bitz" on your Figs.

Tau shoulder pads, sort of 'tied on' various bitz of the Boyz9Shins/forearms/backs). Maybe the odd 'helmet' as well(IG or whatever).

Make it look like they have 'scavenged' bits of kit.

As the Lizards have spines on thier back, you could do some cool conversions with spikes'through' the plates.

Great idea for an army man.

Well actually I have:

Lizard shoulder plates.
Tau shoulder plates (I think).
Kroot shoulder plates (I think).

I was thinking all of them would help make it more 'orky'.
I have a bunch of tyranid stuff too, not sure how those plates would look but I'm all for giving it a whirl.

I don't have a problem doing GS/plasticard, but I'd rather do a simpler kind of conversion. There's alot of lizards to put together. They're all new, and quite a pain putting together since you can't really put them together then remove mold lines...

Anyway as far as a backpack goes, here is what I just thought of: Why not a riveted plate on the back? Wires go from weapon to it, then to the shield? I'll have to do a mockup.

grey_death: iron gob! And I agree, some of those + shoulder pads will help make an immediate visual "oh, orks!" response

Stelek: your list is crap, and completely not competitive.

But seriously though, ambitious project, I admire the tenacity and the possibilities. I think you're well on your way to achieving your chosen visual with basic troops, so I'll just pipe in about lootas. I'd say you have to remove the beefy right arm under the gun with some fiddly x-acto skills. It'd look mighty awkward on the scrawny lizard frame. You comfortable with some greensuffing?

and re: nid bits, make sure they look badly damaged, cut off of corpses. I've seen a lot of people make "nidslayer" conversions with pristine carapaces, and it really just looks like an odd, calcified tumor.

Sweet I know my lists suck. It's all those crappy top ten table players I play. If only I was man enough to go to adepticon, I'd see how it's done.

I prefer my simple cutter for most jobs, is the arm integrated big time? I hate when the hand is all up in the gun. I guess I should just buy a couple and see how it looks. I think warstore has 'em.

You are correct on the nid bits. Here's how I did it on a ultrasmurf squad I converted for a friend. I built the model, he painted (but did not seal). Then I cut the crap outta the nid parts, and he painted in blood/metal damage then sealed. Looked pretty good IMO.

I'm thinking wire from front of shield then bundled (small wire ties) around back between spine spikes to gun... gobs as shoulder pads... as for lootas some kind of back harnes with loads of guns. my .02 cents

I did think about ...geeze how to describe it?

You remember that crazy jetpack guy? Would go to the superbowl and gak, fly his dumb ass around for 2 minutes, dressed up all in white?

Well, why not an over-the-head setup with two control sticks going down to the hands and a set of guns fired over the shoulders?

Is it crazy? lol

re: loota arm integration: it's pretty much a straight cut off the top of the hand and forearm. The top of the shoulder/upper arm might prove fiddly, but it's really nothing too hard to remove. I think you might actually have a tougher time making a saurus arm fit than removing the ork beef. Hopefully this drivel makes more sense once you get your hands on some bits.

I will reserve judgment until the finished product. I think it would be unfair to say any further comments until you finish a unit or 2 and I can see where you are going with this.

Here's a bit of work done today.

It's very rough, but it should give an idea on where I'm going with this.

I'll need to paint first I think, then build. These are primed white, btw.

The 'backpack' is a cut down kroot sidegun, not sure if I like it but it was the first bit jumped out at me.

Gonna try others, probably Tau and/or Nids, see what I like.

I'm not interested in conformity really, so I won't mind if a few look kit-bashed and others look clean.

Oh and here's a pic of the gem I put on the shield. Thoughts?

Other comment: I was thinking maybe I could use some tyranid big guns for my vehicles--what do people think of that? Yes, I know, I should do one and post it. lol

More fiddling. I like this look much better. I use a nid bit as the 'pack' for the gun. I added the shoulderpads I promised. These are kroot pads, fit perfect.

I will have to get a better tool to make such small pinholes, but I'd like to make a pinhole in the two 'eyes' on the nid bit and run the wires into the butt of the gun from there.

Thoughts?

Pics of the warbuggy with TL big shootas and it's crew in (and primed).

I'm still deciding if I want a bunch of banners in the back or some kind of roll cage, or if I'm just going to fill the gaps in.

Lookin' good. The shoulderpads really make them seem Orky, for some reason...

Some Imperial Guard Vox-Casters might work well for some of the back-packs, if you can get your hands on some of those.

Here's pics with the tubes attached as I plan on doing them.

My tool? A thumbtack.

I did a quick n'dirty paint scheme on one, to try and capture the ork colors.

It's forest green (watered down to an ink) base over white.

Dark blood red on the scales, with a crimson highlight. It's not daylight anymore, so it's really hard to see.

I tried a purple w/violet on the backspines and the head, and hated it immediately and overwrote it with the darker green.

I did the gun silver with a crimson wash, don't really like that either--I think I'll have to do something different with the gun to make it 'fit'.

Anyway, in the end I really don't like it. It would probably help if my wife hadn't used my fine tip brushes to paint her pictures with. More after the pics.

So, a better paint scheme I think:

Simple, and should look striking. I'll get some new detail brushes tomorrow, and give it a whirl.

Comments welcome.

Oh, and the gems will only go on the shield, I decided.

Don't like it on the guns, especially once I decided to 'drill' little holes for the tubes to go in.

Which in case anyone is wondering, is my wifes bead thread. You know, for making necklaces and stuff--she's into crafting big time. Since it's like 10 bucks for 100 meters of the stuff, she said I could have some. lol only takes like an inch per guy.

I think I'll put cables on the vehicle gunners as well.

It's a little hard to see, but the driver has a hand axe turned into a 'stick' to drive with. His hand is over the 'stick', I don't need to move it or anything do I? I mean, it's good enough isn't it? lol

Oh and I will fill in the rest of that gap in the front of the warbuggy, I have some plasticard to go over it.

Thanks man. What in particular sold you? Just curious so I replicate it on the trukks and tie it all together.

Yeah, it surprised me how orky they looked with just the shoulderpads on. lol

Those vox-casters are pretty big, no? I didn't like having to cut the spines off to fit stuff on, kinda ruined it for me.

the driver with his foot on the dash . The vehicles give the army a much more studly feel than "lizard guys with 40k weapons".

The shoulderpads work too, very Fallout/ Mad Max.

Yeah that guy gives everyone the giggles. lol

I'm going to do a 'sitting' pose for the two lizards in the trukks as well, similar to the warbuggy. Probably next weekend, I wanna get another 10 orks built tomorrow.

It's surprising how much putting guys together beats me down these days. lol makes me look forward to painting, which is new.

They are somewhat large, if we assume Cadian 'casters. The Catachan ones, actually, are pretty compact.

I don't anticipate using any dreads, but if I did I'd probably get a stegadon and kitbash it. Sadly, that will probably never happen. Or I'll do a proof-of-concept vehicle and never make another, like my Legion of the Damned Vindicator.

For Nobs I've always planned on doing Kroxigor but they're metal and thus a pain in the ass to mod. With the randomness of the blisters, and only one is any good anyway...not sure what to do.
