If I was in charge of GW, I sure as hell would put Marines in the starter set.

They're too easy to make an army out of, on the cheap, than just about anything else in the game. And if I was in charge of GW, I'd make sure that as many people as possible were starting to "get into the hobby".

I'll do you one better, put the pocket rulebook in every army box.

But that would be y'know, logical and stuff.

Starter rules in each battleforce/army box?! Inconceivable! No miniatures company* would do that!

There is a BIG difference between the 2 sheets of paper in a Warmachine Box and the mini rulebooks for warhammer.

I do miss the vehicle datafax's on the back of vehicle boxes.

Yeah, the Warmachine rules aren't so unwieldy!

Edit: On topic I think I would put two platoons of Imperial Guard in a Warhammer 40k starter box: thirty-five models a side, three regular Imperial Guard squads and a Platoon Command squad. I saw some two-part Cadians in the Rumour forum on Warseer, here, so a whack of those frames with Sergeant/Officer, Special Weapon, Heavy Weapon frame. The special weapons would be the usual Grenade Launcher and Flamethrower, while the Heavy Weapons would be Heavy Stubbers, Heavy Bolters, and Rocket Launchers. Add in these sprues for a choice of one of two sorts of head, and either lasguns or autoguns, and you'd have a good set for teaching the basics of 40k.

Yay for Orkses, yawn for the Space Marines (HURR!)

What would you put in there?

Me... the orkses are fine. But I'd throw in 20-30 IG. Use jes Goodwin's trenchcoat design, one peice bodies to save money, seperate heads. And an IG jeep too.

IG vs Orkses is just a more fun game since y'know, they can actually hurt each other.

50 space Marines (call them "Valiant Chinese Patirots chapter") and 100 unarmed Civilians (call them "Filthy Dalai Lama Clique Cultists")

or just Space Marines and Orks.. because that's what's gonna end up in it anyway...

Yes, but not compared to the actual rules in the BFM booklet, or ye ol' 3rd ed. Confrontation booklets that came with every miniature, or the similar booklets for the 1999 minis.

On the other hand, the Warmachine/Hordes starter boxes are half the price or less of a battleforce, and while there are, in fact, fewer figs (3-5) per WM/Hordes box, the fact that you can get started right out of the box makes for a different dynamic.

Why COULDN'T GW put a rulebook in their $100+ battleforce boxes? alternatively, why couldn't they come up with a box that's JUST an HQ and 2 troops (min. needed for a FOC) with some stripped-down rules, like the book in BFM (i.e. just the rules and stats for the units but no scenarios)?

And it wasn't just vehicle datafaxes that came on the back of the box; the old RT boxed sets had the unit's stats (e.g. box o' 10 Marines) on the back.

If we're blowing smoke and hypothesizing, we might as well go all the way. Including in an army box the mini rules and the codex is not too much to ask. Having a starter box of min. FOC with a starter rules booklet or poster is also not too much to ask for starter sets.

I stand by my earlier statement on prepainted in a two-army collection, but this way could work too.

Poorly thought out political commentary on my Dakka Discussions? It's more likely than you think.

Considering the 4kids world of today it seems like Tau would be a good choice. Two, maybe three, 6 man Firewarrior Squads, a two piece Crisis Suit with prefitted weapons either as a Commander or a just as an Elite. If you go with an elite then include a plastic Ethereal. Round it out with and a Stealth Suit or two. On the other side would be Orks, probably what comes with the upcoming box. Include some ruins like the ones from the 3rd Edition Box set and a few objective models for the learning scenarios.

You could probably switch out the Orks for space marines.

I think tau vs space marines.

Tau have 18 fire warriors, a battlesuit, some kroot and a devilfish (why not?)

Space marines have 15 marines and a rhino.

Space marines. I know. But unfortunately GW says "Hurr! More Spaze Marinez!"

This is the one of the main things that made me choose Warmachine over GW for my return to miniatures gaming. Forget about a single 40K starter box - I don't like Marines or Orks. Give me a separate starter for each race (OK, maybe not all races - I can't see a DE starter selling well) with, as syr says, a minimum FOC. Include barebones shooting + melee rules (common to all boxes) with an insert detailing the units in my particular box that ends with an advert for the codex (perhaps even a coupon?). All the starter boxes should be approximately balanced against each other so I can play against other newbies - this is great fun in WM even with just 3 figures in my Khador box. There's nothing like playing games to make you want more units, and with this kind of system you're up and playing the army you want to play extremely quickly. Having to build 1500 points before you can get a game down at the shop is a big ask. I've also found that guys used to running 1000 point WM/Hordes armies are still happy to play a 300 point game against your starter models if they have a half hour to kill (I realize that 40K may not scale as nicely down to low points, but neither do small games tend to be super-competitive).

Sets like Skull Pass are great value, but are also a daunting number of figures to see in sprues on your painting table and are no good to you at all if you have no interest in Dwarves or Gobbos.

Sorry for the huge post, but I guess my 2 cents buys a lot of text.

Yes, the Starter box should have at least 1 HQ and 2 Troops per side. And yes, the Battalion Boxes should also be buildable & fieldable as 1 HQ and 2 Troops.

Of course in Warmachine, it'd be like saying, let's pick a HQ and 2 Troops that you would almost never use in regular play, because competitive Warmachine isn't about the machines at all. Warmachine being yet another infantry combat game is what turned me away from Warmachine.

While the boxes should be approximately balanced, with the sheer number of armies in 40k, that's a tough task. I suppose, as long as the points come out OK, it'll be alright.

You know, most 40k games start out at the 500-pt level, go to 750 or 1000, and then hit 1500 pts. I remember doing a ton of 500-1000 pt games early on, and as new players got into things. Maybe it's just your group that demands 1500+ pts, and you should ask to play smaller games to get started. To be honest, I rather enjoy smaller games.

It must be a problem for GW to make a starter box for £50 and put any reasonable number of figures in it.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
