Looking much better

I'm certain once the brass/metal colours hit them they'll meld really nicely with the rest.

Oh and GO! GO! GO!!! I'm cheering for you.

Wow, I'm more than a little impressed. All that in 3 days? I'm lucky if I do that much in a month! I'll definately be keeping an eye on this, maybe pick up some ideas for my 3rd Soul Grinder I have planned

I'd really like to see some more pics of your special characters (the Bluescribes, Skulltaker on Juggernaught and the Changeling). Have you posted any WIP looks at these?

Nice to see you're not letting the Daemon-naysayers get you down, I hope you get to the tourney and beat them all silly

Very impressive job here.

Are you using the foundation/standard GW paints as a base - then hitting with washes - or is this 100% wash?

Very interested in how you are doing this and using the most sincere form of flattery by copying.

Thanks. Mmm...skittles.

Actually, that's one of the things I'm a bit worried about...tying the whole army together and making it coherent. I'm hoping to use the bases and details to do that.

Every model so far has involved a base color, two highlight colors, and a wash, Except the Bloodcrushers, which are using three highlights.

Get Augustus in here...he can explain it much better than I can. Remember, I largely developed these techniques off of a late-night conversation over dinner after the Team Tourney two-three years ago.

But essentially, its just drybrushing/overbrushing using the big brushes. The basic principle is to let your model strip the paint from the brush, instead of using the brush to apply paint to the model. Washing is a stage that I added because it blends the highlgiths together so nicely. (or I just wasn't paying attention when he told me).

DAY FOUR

Had a lot of time tonight. Which was good, because tonight was centerpiece model night. The objective was to get all the base colors done, so I could devote the weekend to detail work.

The difference with the centerpiece models was that I planned to have multiple base colors, to give them more "oomph" visually and make them stand out from the rest of the army, while still obviously having them be part of that army.

So after three hours of painting, here's the results on the six models I worked on. Pay attention to the Soul Grinders, because I didn't include any close-ups of them. Seriously though, there's not much there yet...the sheer size makes them centerpiece models (deserving of two base colors) but honestly, I see too many ways to screw them up, so I'm going to keep them as simple as possible. But they're ready for detail work.

The Changeling

Those who pay attention to the WIP Conversion posts I've done in the last few weeks might notice that this changeling looks different than the one I posted before. That's because he is. I converted up four more and are seeing if the conversions will sell on ebay. I liked the way this one looked the best, so I kept him.

The cloak is essentially drybrushing a series of progressively lighter greys, starting with shadow grey and working to...well, can't recall right now. Then I hit the model with a purple wash.

Check out the auction here!

The Bluescribes
[/size]

Awkward angle, but you can see the flame effect best from here. That's the color scheme for all the discs...gold disc, silver spikes, flames. Simple, but I think it'll be eye-catching.

The Heralds of Tzeentch on Chariots

I'm going with the purple/pink skin for the heralds...after all, they're supposed to be "super-horrors." I think I like how the cloaks are looking...but as always, we'll see what they look like once the washes dry. As you can see, I started painting the chains, then realized those should probably fall under "detail" work, because I'm going to want to do them after I do some other stuff.

Brass/Gold is going to be the color that ties all of this together the best. It fits with every color in the scheme, and really stands out. I'd make a serious effort to use as much of the color on detail work as possible. Plus it's a super easy color to work with ^_^! gryphonne sepia is your friend with brass/gold.

On things that really just won't work out with brass (no details to paint it on!) try mixing in colors. You're going to have a rainbow of colors at your disposal, so really don't be timid about going nuts with it. Bright red tongues for your blue/pink horrors and the like.

What is your plan for the scales on the screamers?

And you're right that the basing will make a big difference in tying it all together.

Great job so far. Keep it going!

Thanks. The screamers are a relatively recent addition to the plan. Playtesting revealed that I needed a slight addition to the anti-tank capability.

Thanks. Plan is to pick colors and apply to all the models that need them. i.e. Bone, tongues, brass, etc.

Thanks for the tips. I've been racking my braing to figure out how to use the bases to tie it all together. I'm looking for something outside the usual, which makes it a bit trickier.

DAY FIVE

Five concentrated hours of painting tonight. Hit pretty much every model with something. I focused on two things today: bones, flames, and tongues. Or to put it another way, browns, ivories, yellows, and reds.

Things are really starting to come together here.

Flamers of Tzeentch

I think I ready to stick a fork in these guys and call them done. There may be some touch-up type stuff left, and figuring out exactly how I'm doing the base, but aside from that, I've got models here that I'm not ashamed to Deep Strike onto the tabletop. Woo-hoo...first models done! Only five days!

Pink (and Blue) Horrors of Tzeentch

These guys are also pretty much done. Again, touch-up and basing, but aside from that, they can join the flamers on the tabletop any day. The Changeling needs more work, but the actual Horrors all pass muster. I consider doing their tentacles/hair in different colors...but honestly, every color I tried on the test model ended up looking way too garish.

One thing I love...Horrors don't have eyes!

Plaguebearers of Nurgle

Something's missing here (aside from the eyes). I'm just not sure exactly what it is. Obviously the eyes need to be done, and the standards should be done in a nice rusty brass...but I'm not quite certain where to go with these boys.

Screamers of Tzeentch

Almost done with these guys. The scales need to be contrasted with the base color, but that's it for me here.

Soul Grinders of Tzeentch and Khorne

No close-up yesterday, so here's a closeup today. About 66% done here. One of the major things to do next.

The Bluescribes

About 90% done here. Some cleanup and maybe some freehanding on the scrolls.

The Heralds

About 80% here. Cleanup, making these screamers match the regular screamers, eyes, staves, chains, etc.

What's not pictured: The Bloodcrushers. Honestly, Red is my Achilles Heel. Those are going to be my main focus tomorrow...

Looking pretty nice for a speed painted army The contrasts are really working in your favour, which makes it easier when you are doing the Daemonic horde. Maybe you could do a little more washing over the metals? They're still a bit stark. You've definitely used contrast and simplicity well. I hope you get to the end and have it all done nicely I'll keep and eye on your progress

Looking great! Particularly for just five days!

Perhaps the thing the plaguebearers are missing is some glossy-oozy bits? I know the washes can leave a matte finish.

DAY SIX

Day 6, I managed to squeeze about 6 hours of painting in. Purely coincidental, that. 5 hours on Day 5, and 6 hours on Day 6.

Anyway, I continued to procrastinate on the Bloodcrushers and Skulltaker. Added some more paint (mainly of the brown and bone on skull variety) but something is still bugging me quite significantly. When that happens with my writing, I usually write around the problem and come back to it later, when I can hopefully identify exactly what is bugging me. So hopefully, I'll be able to come at the problem tomorrow with clear eyes.

Of course, I'll be able to focus on the problem tomorrow, because except for basing, every other model is to what I'd consider an acceptable GT standard. They're not about to win Golden Demons, and I don't see a painting award in my future, but I'm happy with the way that the models all look. If I have time this week (once I finish the Bloodcrushers, basing, a display base, and potentially some extra models - on reflection, a Chaos Spawn or two might be a useful model to have with the Bluescribes in my army), I'll go back and do more detail work on the centerpiece models.

So here's the product of six days and approximately 18 hours and change of concentrated speed painting.

HQ: The Bluescribes

Mainly clean-up work here. Painted the icons underneath the horrors feet, cleaned up the spikes, and washed the metal. If I've got time, I'll go back and add some freehand lettering on the scrolls, and maybe do the eyes (although they're so ridiculously tiny that It'd be difficult to do anything noticable.

HQ: Herald of Tzeentch on a Chariot #1

Aside from more detail work here, the screamers got some touch up as well, along with a wash of purple which actually added a lot when the models are viewed next to the pink horrors and the plaguebearers. Basically, every model in the army with the exception of the Soul Grinders and Pink Horrors got a purple wash today. It does something subtle to tie the models together.

HQ: Herald of Tzeentch on a Chariot #2

Same here, more detail work. One thing I never noticed before was how the sorcerer model has a face on the side of the head. Lots of stuff I could do here with herald himself, if I had time. If I don't (which is quite likely) I'm pretty happy with the way this guy looks right now.

E: Flamers of Tzeentch

Said I thought they were done yesterday. Washed 'em in purple today. Can't really tell in the picture...like I said, its a really subtle effect that seems to tie the army together.

T: Pink and Blue Horrors of Tzeentch, along with The Changeling

Drybrushed another coat of tentacle pink onto the pink horrors. Realized they were getting a bit too purple after the initial purple wash. Blue horrors got the purple wash (they'd never had it before), and I drybrushed Shadow Grey onto the Changeling's robes, as well as filled out his staff. If I have time, I'd like to do something to the flowing scrolls...not sure if that's freehanding or what.

T: Plaguebearers of Nugle

Purple wash made the biggest difference here. It really helped them fit in with the rest of the army, at least in my opinion. Details were picked out in a variety of colors. I may go over the dripping bits with a glosscoat to make the glossy...but I kind of like it the way its looking right now. I may change my mind (or that might join the list of things to do if time allows).

FA: Screamers of Tzeentch

Purple wash, scales, and more bone on the jaws and spikes. I think they've come together nicely.

HS: Soul Grinders

I'm pretty happy with the way these have turned out.

I think I would have gone with the brass on the plague weapons instead of bone.

The purple washing does seem to be working nicely for you. You're right though that some of it's effect seems lost in the photos. You can catch some hints of the color though here and there. Maybe with propper lighting and all that, you'll get better translation from mini to photo ^_^.

While I agree, that it would tie the different units further together, I think the bone is a much more fitting color for the plague bearers.
Otherwise, youre army is turning out nicely.

Im looking forward to the crushers, even though youre complaining about them. Cant wait for the basing to begin. That should really tie the army together.

Very inspiring work here Bill.

I've been thinking about maybe trying to do Daemons and mainly painting them with mainly just washes (which is, of course, different from what you did), but this little blog has definitely made me think that Daemons are an army you can paint relatively quickly and still have them look good.

Of course, I really should just stick to painting my Tyranids.

But great job on the blog, and I'm very interested to see how you do in the tournie with the army.

DAY SEVEN

Day 7...After about five hours, I finally managed to get the Bloodcrushers and Skulltaker to a point where I can live with them. So now all the models are pretty much done, except for basing.

E: Bloodcrushers

I'm not totally happy with them, but I think I finally got them to a point where they aren't demanding that I put more work in on them. After drybrushing a bunch of different layers of red, I did all of the gold trim, and then washed with purple.

62 Models, 24 hours, 7 days

Well, here's the whole package. Now I just have to do the bases. I'm thinking of trying to do something besides the normal brown earth/green grass.
